install fails: BusyBox v1.1.3 (initramfs)

I have been trying to install the Ubuntu Hardy Heron Alpha 5 & 6 and have received the following error: BusyBox v1.1.3 (Debian 1:1.1.3-5 ubuntu 12) Build-in Shell (ash)...and (initramfs).

I have tried the following to resolve this problem (and failed):
1. formated the HD as NTFS using GPARTED - same problem existed
2. downloaded and burned new ISO images of HH Alpha 5 & 6 - then attempted installation - failed
3. tried to reinstall my previous (working version) of HH Alpha 4 (I believe) - and failed!

What finally worked was setting my DVD/ROM pinout (hardware setting) from Master to Slave with only this device on the cable.

I am not sure why this worked, but it is a simple workaround for this perplexing problem.

I updated Gutsy to all the latest updates. Then upgraded to hardy and got a screen BusyBox v1.13(Debian 1:1.1.3-5ubuntu12) built in shell (ash)

initramfs
     It looks and works like an old DOS machine with unix built in commands ls, mkdir etc.. I'm dead in the water what can i do? I have only one hard drive no floppy and an AMD64 system.

Well Michael I think this is due to a bad upgrade. After a bit of research I fell back to the Gutsy kernel (esc from grub prompt) I have downloaded and burnt a CD then ran the live CD without updating my hard drive. It ran fine. I am using Hardy right now with the Gutsy kernel. I guess that I need to copy the hardy kernel from the CD to /boot but I do not know how to do that. There are lots of posts on this subject plus lots of fixes that work for other systems. I would like to think that an upgrade gutsy to hardy with Synaptic provides a stable build????? Regards Ian.

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Hi,
 I did two things. Firstly I went back to grub and invoked the Gutsy
kernel and I used the gutsy kernel with hardy for a few months. The
second thing I did was to have a 500 gig drive fitted to my box as
master. I then did a CD install of hardy 64 bit amd on the new drive
with no issues. Well I still have to get a few things running with fire
fox plug ins. I suspect that you need more work on download checksums
error recovery etc. Regards Ian.

Frankly, I'm a little gun-shy right now. Somehow or another, Ubuntu was
creating a conflict with Vista and the "work-around" didn't always work, so
I uninstalled Ubuntu. I want to wait until A5 is released before
reinstalling.
So should I download the program again or what?

I changed my mind, if I'm going to be using open source OS, the least I can
do it to comply with requests such as yours. So:
1) I download the program afresh and installed it from a CD "inside" Avista
SP1
2) I was able to get to the OS and download all the updates -- would
linux-image-2.6.27* have been included in all that?
If no, tell me how.

BTW, it appears to working... for the time being.

This is a reply to all. I think that this busybox thing is due to not
being able to boot. It gets stuck due to in my case a bad upgrade from
gutsy to hardy. I think a lot of guys have bad CDs and if they ran the
check cd in place of installing they may see a fault. I got my self a
new big 500 gig drive and cut a CD and installed no problem. In
conclusion the OS is okay once you have it but getting it is usually
easy but can mess up. I think that the Ubuntu team needs to look at the
file transfer error recovery which I find to be a bit odd at this stage
with the TCP/IP internet. Regards Ian.

Will, if you do something like 'uname -a' from a command line it should be able to tell you which version of the kernel you are running. Please let us know.

Mr. Miguelli - since you are the original bug reporter, are you able to reproduce this issue with 2.6.27?

Just started the Spring Semester at college and in the class I am taking we are doing basic command prompt and intro to Linux. I am currently using a lisenced copy of vista. To get to the point:

When trying to run ubuntu 8.04 Third Edition from the DVD provided with my "The Official Ubuntu Book" I receive a similar error as reported by the original post. I boot from the dvd, choose english, hit F4 then chose safe mode and to run Ubuntu with out a change to my computer so i guess you could lable it an (instanced).

A loading box appears displaying progress for loading "Linux Kernel" then brings up the Ubuntu logo with the nifty night rider back and forth graphic. After maybe 15 seconds my screen changes to a black screen which has text and a flashing prompt.

Busy Box V 1.1.3 (Debian 1:1.1.3-5 Ubuntu 12) Built inshell (ash) Enter 'help' for a list of Built-in commands.

(initramfs) <insert flashing curser here>.

I know the dvd works as i can boot from dvd on the lab computers at school. Let me know if you need more information. Also I am new to linux and any/all commands regarding it.

Maybe the DVD works on another machine but it may not be working on
yours. Busy box seems to be a temporary set of shell commands to
facilitate booting. I had the problem after an update. I fixed it by
getting an updated CD and re-installation. When you put in the DVD
select check DVD on your machine and reader. Good luck Ian.
