Bug Description

Since latest update, on 2023-01-09 my laptop can not reach Gnome, stuck on the text boot screen after GRUB. Kernel: 5.19.0-28 (previous installed was 5.19.0-26). No useful error message displayed.

When doing ALT+CTRL+F2 I can log as user and see (top) that the computer is not hang.
When doing CTRL+ALT+TAB, the graphical Ubuntu shutown screen does appear, then the computer does reboot.

When booting with 5.19.0-26 I can the same issue, but with more debug lines on the text boot screen. No useful error message displayed.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Please check for crashes and also collect a full system log:

1. Look in /var/crash for crash files and if found run:
    ubuntu-bug YOURFILE.crash
Then tell us the ID of the newly-created bug.

2. If step 1 failed then look at https://errors.ubuntu.com/user/ID where ID is the content of file /var/lib/whoopsie/whoopsie-id on the machine. Do you find any links to recent problems on that page? If so then please send the links to us.

3. Run:
    journalctl -b0 > journal.txt
and attach the resulting text file here.

affects: plymouth (Ubuntu) → ubuntu
Changed in ubuntu:
status: New → Incomplete

Ok thanks. Note about the bug: my Gnome had login's password disabled, once GDM3 reinstalled, user password is now asked to login.

Below is how I have back my laptop without having to reinstall the whole OS (to help other users):
sudo apt remove gdm3
sudo apt purge gdm3
sudo apt install gdm3
reboot

"purge" includes "remove" so you don't need the remove command. Although it's best to never tell people to remove core components because doing so can automatically trigger removing other core components. Which can end badly.

Maybe just try:

  sudo apt --purge reinstall gdm3
