Bug Description

My tiny PC is a Raspberry Pi-2B and was running Ubuntu- Mate 20.04.4 (just about OK)
Small issue with HDMI display and sound - not urgent, but what urgently bothers me is this BUG, I've lost my USB Wi-Fi recognition when I upgraded as Ubuntu asked would i like to upgrade to 22.04 version. I said OK. Did the upgrade from 20.04 to 22.04 - Took awhile ran fine but no Wi-Fi?

Previously in the upgrade I had disabled as requested the Screensaver and locked screen etc, etc The Upgrade went ahead All OK I used my Nano USB wi-fi to do this e.g to Router
Took awhile. All came good - had to be careful not to stress hardware. The upgrade
was all done over my Wi-Fi USB nano (No Problem)

But the Problem was at upgrade reset stage : None of the USB ports will activate when a Nano
Wi-Fi is plugged in. I had no problem with these under Ubuntu-Mate 18.04.6 or 20.04.4: Just in 22.04 its a failure

So now I have a problem! The USB's will not activate the Nano's (no green or blue light on them either) - tryed them all in/ out and power reset NOTHING... But other systems OK

My USB Wi-Fi combo mouse and keyboard are OK, plus DATA USB's are OK. But not USB's Nano Wi-Fi's
They simply will not activate (Recognise their presence) - and so networking can not be established: suggest read launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/702914

Below is the dmesg|tail of the same PC Pi-2B but running Ubuntu-Mate 20.04-4, and where the USB Wi-Fi nano's work just fine, and internet also fine. P.S (I've interchanged the micro SD card) so hardware is same:same - just the software different. I don't know if this information helps you. Ubuntu_mate 22.04-1 inthe same rig is the only one with the Wi-Fi nano problem (Both the 20.04 and the 22.04 have display and sound issues (nothing unsolvable), but the problem is the Wi-Fi Nano on 22.04

Again below are the results of my working OK Wi-Fi of system 20.04

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Libera.chat.

From 20.04-4 to it upgrading to 22.04.1 I noticed the WiFi icon (top right change) I guess part of the procedure and it even had downloaded and installed latest 22.04.1 over, thru the same WiFi connection, so why could it not match onto the hardware/ software routines and sub routines of likes 20.04.4 - like once the upgrade successfully competed/ installed.

Sorry! I'm just an ordinary retired Power Engineer

To me this is a security problem as well and as informed last night, but your chappie Daniel Manrique <email address hidden> said differently and yet https://launchpad.net/~andrew-woodhead666 said differently also that it is bug

This getting to me a pain in the backside. One says one thing and one say's another

Have I done anything wrong: you offered me to upgrade and that is what I did

Dear Brian Murray and colleagues

I'm very grateful to you all and sorry for being a nuisance. The sudo apt
install linux-modules-extra-raspi worked. Thank you. However it asked me to
remove 12 packages, stating for me to use 'sudo apt autoremove' to remove
them first. This confused me for at the end the statement went on saying Do
you wish to continue [y/n]. In the end I just typed y. ( This I think the
old packages are still in there) for all I did was click Y .... Maybe some
advice you can give?.... Anyway

It installed the packages and at the end I reset the Pi-2B (which
incidentally in Ubuntu's web pages it reiterates PI- 2B is strictly not for
the latest Ubuntu 20.04 nor 22.04 builds).

Well at startup I noticed my WiFi nano was activating. Tiny light on and
flickering) But I used my Lan to check all ok. One processor core (&
switching between all 4) was being held at 100%. So nothing doing...
Firefox would not load. So just left things alone for 8-10 minutes. I gave
it a bit of time and reset PC ( a couple of times). Eventually I could load
up Firefox either over Lan or NOW via my WiFi from any of my USB ports.
Hurray

So success! THANK YOU!

But at cost ...

BBC iPlayer in windowed box (picture and sound in sync, though picture not
truly smooth but nonetheless truly watchable) Pi-2B took the following
resources..

All 4 cores on 900 MHz CPU running at between 97 to 100%
SWAP was 100% (128 MiB) Fully used up and Memory at 700 MiB (75%)

( I had tried previously on build 20.04.4 the Raspberry recommend
overclocking (CPU to 1000 MHz etc, as I have heat sink) And so attempted
change in usercfg.txt of the Fat12 Boot partition, but Ununtu didn't like
it and would flash/ screen, window boxes flashing etc, so in the end I
returned to default).. I'm not a specialist

Obviously the limit has now been reached on my tiny Pi 2B running
Ubunt-Mate latest 22.04 Jammy Jellyfish

Next step is how to reclaim some resources. Any advice would be helpful but
you have all done enough for me

Thank you again. The sound alteration after boot that I make I can live
with if like desiring video/ iPlayer sound. And the window box ghosting I
can live with as long as I respect single function action and not moving
boxes about Basically I just use the Browser and the odd time typing a
letter..

The thing is my Pi 2B only takes 6 to 10 watts of power. And a positive in
today's energy markets

Again, many thanks

John F. Brady
