Bug Description

I'm using Gutsy. After installation I allowed Ubuntu to use the restricted video driver but after reboot the system was extremely slow. I think this is because Ubuntu thinks the vga card is Ati X1600 but in fact it's Ati Mobility FireGL V5200. There must some problem in the hardware detection. The Mobility FireGL V5200 is based on the X1600 chipset. This might cause the problem.

Please tell me what files should I attach to this report.

This bug might be related to bug #94314 .

This problem can be solved by installing the ATI driver with Envy. 3D acceleration will work but it won't set the best resolution for the screen.

I`m attaching Xorg.0.log of Gutsy Live CD. This may help. Hardy Alpha 6 Live CD starts with the correct resolution, maybe this bug won`t exists in Hardy. I`ll test it and let you know.

I'm reopening this bug because there are a couple of problems with the restricted ati driver. Sometimes the mouse cursor is messed up, firefox 3 is slow when i'm scrolling, some video games are lagging. I checked the description of the ati driver in synaptic, it says only Ati Mobility FireGL V5000 is supported but not the V5200. It still might be a problem, that Ubuntu recognizes the card as X1600. Maybe just a new version of ati driver is needed.

I've the same problem, the mouse cursor crash when I enable compiz. With or without compiz, the scroll of firefox and another app are lagging.

I've enabled the ATI driver from the Hardware restricted driver app.

This is how ubunto recognize my video card:

pfrancav@pfrancav-laptop:~$ lspci | grep ATI
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc M56P [Radeon Mobility X1600]

What do you have to do to fix the problem ?

Which version of Ubuntu are you using? Try to run xfix in recovery mode.

I'm using Hardy 8.04 with the latest kernel upgraded from the repository.

xfix only ?, without parameters ?

thanks

Press esc when you're booting and choose recovery mode. Then you'll find xfix.

Ok, I did it, then when I boot again the restricted driver were disabled.

Then, I enabled the restricted driver and I still have the same problem, I
mean, the lagging when I browse, and the deformed mouse pointer when I
enable compiz.

Should I update manually the ATI driver, how ?

What does this output mean ?

pfrancav@pfrancav-laptop:~$ glxinfo | grep direct
direct rendering: No (If you want to find out why, try setting
LIBGL_DEBUG=verbose)
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa GLX Indirect
