Please start off with reading https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PackagingGuide

I suggest to follow the complete https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PackagingGuide/Complete guide and especially focus on the "from scratch" parts instead of the "CDBS" parts since they are mandatory to understand how the actual build process of debian packages works.

Some general notes:
* you could work together on it, though since Paul commented first it's basically up to him.
* before you start packaging rbutil, please leave a comment here and assign the bug to yourself so that everyone knows you are working on it
* rbutil is using Qt's buildsystem rather than the GNU autotools, which makes one thing different - instead of running ./configure you run qmake (without arguments, qmake usually autodetects everything)

If you need help: either shout in #ubuntu-motu on irc.ubuntu.com or you can try to reach me directly, my nick is 'apachelogger'

I'm happy to work together with you on this, Siyad. I will assign the bug to myself, but I won't start on it for a couple of days to give you some time to respond. Either reply to this thread or send me an email at <email address hidden>.

This is a blast from the past. Sorry, I'd completely forgotten that I had signed up to work on this bug. I'm actually home from school now and working full time, but I will give it some time this weekend (I have the 4th off.)

FWIW, rbutil seems to use a statically compiled qt binary. Does that affect anything?

This is simply not the case. The default build of rbutil is dynamically linked against qt. We do provide a statically linked binary on the Rockbox page, but this needs extra care to get built. For emphasis: the standard build of rbutil is dynamically linked against the system Qt.

It is however possibly an issue that rbutil uses Rockbox's own libspeex instead of linking against the system libspeex.

I wanted to do this but people on #rockbox told me it is not a wise idea to package this because they tend to make backwards incompatible changes (like server adresses) and we would have a hard time to keep up with new versions and doing PPA just for this is not a good idea either, we can just point users to Rockbox Wiki -> http://www.rockbox.org/wiki/RockboxUtility

personally I dont understand why its needed?
i searched the ubuntu forums and someone game me a great way to install it in 2 min
First download the rockbox utility
Extract it into something like /opt/rockbox/ (do this under sudo)
Then right click your applications menu and select "edit menus"
Make a new entry in sound or whatever you want
your pretty much done now i just did it and upgraded my rockbox firmware all in 10 min along with changing my theme.

I really think this is not needed and if you cant do the above IDK
I hope this helped someone
