Thank you for your bug report, could you add your 'journalctl -b 0' from a session having the issue?

The system booting too slow is different to applications launching too slow. Which issue would you like this bug to be about?

If you would like the bug to be about the system booting too slow then please provide a shorter, cleaner boot log by rebooting, logging in and then immediately running:

  journalctl -b0 > freshboot.txt

and attach the resulting file here.

If you would like the bug to be about apps launching slowly then please run:

  top

and tell us what processes are using the most CPU.

Thanks.

I can't see anything obvious in that log. This makes me think something is running fundamentally too slow; either the CPU or the disk.

To check the disk speed please run a benchmark in the 'Disks' app, and/or use:

  sudo hdparm -t /dev/sda

and tell us the results.

The CPU sounds like it might be restricted by thermald. Please try removing the file:

  /etc/thermald/thermal-conf.xml

because it sounds like there's a problem in that file.

affects: gnome-shell (Ubuntu) → ubuntu

The result of disk speed by running sudo hdparm -t /dev/sda is:

/dev/sda:
 Timing buffered disk reads: 238 MB in 3.01 seconds = 79.14 MB/sec

And there is no any file named therml-conf.xml but there is file named thermal-cpu-cdev-order.xml in /etc/thermald/ directory.

OK, the disk isn't quite slow enough that it would explain this bug. But maybe.

The problem in the log with '/etc/thermald/thermal-conf.xml' is probably that some other file expects it to exist when it doesn't. That might mess with your thermal configuration. Please try to find out what it is by running:

  sudo grep -r thermal-conf.xml /etc

Please also reinstall these packages in case one of them is missing or out of date:

sudo apt install --reinstall linux-firmware intel-microcode

and then reboot.

Did this machine ever boot quicker in the past? If so, what version of Ubuntu was that?

Also, if you have 'tlp' installed then please remove it.

After running this command sudo grep -r thermal-conf.xml /etc, nothing will happened. But there is a file named thermal-cpu-cdev-order.xml. This file is to be remove?

I used Ubuntu 18.04 LTS in past, this version were faster than Ubuntu 20.04 LTS.

I also change the default swappiness value(60) to 5 because it consumes too much swap memory during copying any large file from flash disk or any other devices to laptop and vice versa. During copying files, RAM is available but it still used swap memory.
But before changing swappiness value, this version(20.04LTS) always perform slower than 18.04LTS.

There is sometimes shows some firmware missing during boot. I used legacy first boot method to install Ubuntu 20.04 LTS. My motherboard supports both Legacy First and UEFI method.

And there is always shows some error on every booting such as 'Sorry, Ubuntu 20.04 experience an internal error' and 'System program problem detected'. I were very few experiencing such error in Ubuntu 18.04LTS.

There is no 'tlp' installed in my system.

Thank you sir! For helping me :)

Hmm, can you please reboot again and then run this command ASAP:

  ps auxw > allprocesses.txt

and attach the resulting text file?
