Closing issue. Reinstalling and re-configuring X made this go away.

Changed in xorg (Ubuntu):
status: New → Invalid
affects: xorg (Ubuntu) → ubuntu

I'm having the same issue on a Thinkpad T480s with an i7 8550U with Ubuntu 20.04.
Several programs crash with a segfault, e.g. vlc, mpv, glxgears, steam...
Upgrading to newest kernel 5.6.7 or the newest mesa (from https://launchpad.net/~oibaf/+archive/ubuntu/graphics-drivers) both didn't help.
Reinstalling and re-configuring X didn't help.
What eventually worked was the addition of "MESA_LOADER_DRIVER_OVERRIDE=i965" to /etc/environment
