Bug Description

I'm running Ubuntu Hardy Alpha 3 with all updates to date (2008-01-23) on a Dell Inspiron 1520 with Intel X3100 graphics and Compiz enabled.

Steps to reproduce:

1. Configure gnome-power-manager so that the laptop does not suspend or hibernate when the lid closes

2. Connect an external monitor, keyboard and mouse. Configure desktop to display on both laptop LCD and external screen.

2. Shut the laptop lid. Notice that the LCD backlight has turned off.

3. Type at the keyboard or move the mouse.

Result: Laptop LCD light comes back on with the lid shut and the LAPTOP GETS DANGEROUSLY HOT after a few minutes.

Under Windows XP/ Vista, this does not happen; the LCD backlight stays off when shut with external keyboard/mouse activity, even if the desktop is configured to display on both laptop LCD and external screen.

Please tell me which logs/configs you would like to see, and how I can output them (I understand cat /var/logs/... but don't really understand dmesg).

May I take this opportunity to thank all the volunteers working with Ubuntu. Your efforts are highly appreciated. Seriously, thank-you.

Disable compiz and see what happens. Compiz is black-listed for this video card on Gutsy, and it will probably be blacklisted for Hardy as well.
