Bug Description

On a k6-2+ machine that has win98 and xandros dual boot okay. The mouse works okay on both. When I tried to install gutsy it was okay I got the screen but could not move to install and click. No mouse controll. I tried twice. Finally I went back to an old edgy CD and was able to click on install. I've never had a problem on my two new AMD64 systems using feisty 64.

Also when I manually tried to figure out where to put kernels etc I was lost. I need to junk xandros and put ubuntu on line. There are lots of things to click but no way of figuring what to do? I ended doing he win thing and formatted the disk and got edgy up. What went wrong on gutsy 32?

The system is still running edgy without problem. I tried installing Xbuntu Hardy Heron from CD and that too had no mouse control. I replaced the bus mouse with a serial mouse on coms 1 followed by coms 2 still no luck. This is an older system with an Asus socket 7 and an AMD K6-2+ at 450Mhz.

Here are some more details. It looks like this bug is similar to bugs 108382 and 108621. I cleaned my hard drive and tried again to install Xubuntu Hardy Heron and got as far as needing to click the install icon but the mouse had no control.

AMD K6 III+450Mhz
L1 cashe 64k
L2 cashe 128k
Ram 256Meg
chipset intel I430hx

File /etc/X11/xorg.conf contains:-

Section "Input device"
    Identifier "Configured Mouse"
     Option "CorePointer"
End Section

Comparing with my main machine It seems to be missing
  Option "Device" "/dev/input/mice"
 Option "Protocol" "ImPS/2"
 Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
 Option "Emulate3Buttons" "true"
Also the server layout section is missing

 InputDevice "Configured Mouse"

Any developers out there may have some ideas to try on me. Regards Ian.

symptoms, upgrade Ubuntu Edgy to Feisty or installation of Feisty, Gutsy or Hardy dead mouse. Not able to finish the installation or dead in the water after upgrade. Applicable to older system using the intel i8042 chipset. So you may be better of using Xbuntu which also has this problem.

1) Regain control of situation. "shift alternate then hit NumLock". The numbers keypad (block on right side of the keyboard) becomes the mouse. 5 is the left click and the surrounding keys move in the obvious direction. (Additionally 0=lock drag, dot(.)=release drag, *=middle click, -=right click, /=left click and are reported to be qualified with 5, sort of works)

2)New installs simply use the keys 1 to 9 to position cursor and 5 to click and complete the install.

3)Now for the fix. move cursor to Applications 5, move to Accessories 5, move to Terminal 5. You now have an open terminal. Type "sudo nano /boot/grub/menu.lst" (that's LST) enter the password and find the first line (assuming "default 0") with "kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.24-16-generic root=UUID=37319aae-6b1f-46aa-95c1-59725562c8a9 ro quiet splash i8042.noloop" or similar this is the kernel that grub will load. If "default 0" then the first kernel will be loaded. At the end of this line add the option "i8042.noloop" as shown, check it then type "cont o", "cr", "cont x", "exit" and "cr". Get control using the numbers keypad and restart the system. The mouse should work.

4) This will have to be repeated each time the kernel is upgraded. There is an option to make this option default. I've not tried it but we can experiment with this "http://grumpymole.blogspot.com/2007/05/ubuntu-how-to-edit-grub-boot-parameters.html" and "http://users.bigpond.net.au/hermanzone/p15.htm#kopt". Again "sudo nano /boot/grub/menu.lst", find the line "# kopt=root=UUID=37319aae-6b1f-46aa-95c1-59725562c8a9 ro i8042.noloop" again add i8042.noloop at the end. Good luck, hope it works for you as this took me ages to dig out.
