Bug Description

Upgraded 7.10 64bit to 8.04 64bit and it works fine with 2.6.24-2 kernel. Can not boot with 2.6.24-3 or -4 since it can't find hard disk. Disabled splash and quiet from grub and last message before failure on boot-up is:

floppy0: no floppy controllers found

Then get message that it can't find hard disk and initramfs error. Don't know how to capture better error message.

Output for lspci -v below (taken from second install of 32bit 7.10 on same hardware).

I get a similar problem. Ubuntu 6.10 worked once, and other versions that I got in a book, but I wanted a later version so I tried to install 7.10. I am sort of new to Linux but I have used other Unix systems in a simple way (find something that works and use it to to develop software). I re-partitioned 3 disks and could probably use an older version or Suse but I wanted to use Ubuntu. I have an Intel processor.

I have programmed for a long time but am new to Linux.

I get initramfs ata2.01 exception emask 0x0 SAct 0X0 Serr 0x0 action 0x2 frozen.

I'm closing this bug as the reporter has confirmed that it is no longer an issue.

realtime: You should open a new bug describing your issue as you are experiencing your problem on Gutsy which has a different kernal than Hardy, the under development version. Please include as much information about you system as possible. Thanks...

This is the latest attempt.

I attempted to install 7.04, 6.06, and 7.10 with similar results.

This is the result of trying to install 7.10.

Disks are partitioned and formatted ext3

I received similar errors before I installed SUSE 10.3
SUSE installed itself on the SATA drive. Ubuntu would not install itself on any drive.

There may be data on the drives from running Knoppix, if it does not clean up its files.

There was data on the drive (C drive I think) from saving it while running parted-magic.

This is after I installed SUSE.

I had similiar issue with 7.10 on Apple PPC G3 platform. The source of the
problem was that initramfs was missing IDE driver for my hardware. The
problem only occured after install. The LiveCD had the driver.

I basically followed the procedure listed at bottom of this
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=588153 from Efrain
Valles<http://ubuntuforums.org/member.php?u=51963>
to fix the problem. It basically rebuilts the initramfs with the missing
driver. I don't know the driver you need so you will probably have to
perform lsmod | grep ide or lsmod | grep ata from liveCD to find listed
drivers.
