grub-install failing in Ubuntu setup

Bug #181276 reported by Mahmoud H. Al-Qudsi on 2008-01-08
Affects Status Importance Assigned to Milestone

Bug Description

It seems that Ubuntu setup will fail when attempting grub-install to an individual partition under certain circumstances.
The fatal grub-install() error occurs when manually entering a partition into the "Advanced" box that determines where GRUB will be installed. It occures for both (hdx,y) and /dev/sdxy notations.

The full details of this issue (and examples of errors) can be found at this thread:
I was hoping to get some verification first before opening a bug report on the issue, but that didn't happen.

Seems to happen to the MBR as well, in certain circumstances:

I just tried to install Hardy Alpha 4 as well as the Feb-16 daily. I also tried it without the network cable attached.
The install fails when it tries to install grub.
This is an AMD64 system, using an NForce570 chipset and a SATA drive with an NVIDIA graphics card.

What is strange about the system is that the hard drive is one that was previously used as one member of a raid install.

I haven't been able to figure out how to get around this problem yet.

I tried reformatting the disk with the reiser fs, then re-install from the AMD64 daily alternate from Feb-16 and it worked fine.
