[needs-packaging] fprint

Bug #179923 reported by Stéphane Graber on 2008-01-02
Affects Status Importance Assigned to Milestone

Bug Description

"The fprint project aims to plug a gap in the Linux desktop: support for consumer fingerprint reader devices.

Previously, Linux support for such devices has been scattered amongst different projects (many incomplete) and inconsistent in that application developers would have to implement support for each type of fingerprint reader separately. For more information on where we came from, see the project history page.

We're trying to change that by providing a central system to support all the fingerprint readers we can get our hands on. The software is open source and in the long term we're shooting for adoption by distributions, integration into common desktop environments, etc. "

It'd be three packages a library (libfprint), a pam module (libpam-fprint) and a testing tool (fprint_demo)

Code is LGPL

These packages are now in debian experimental.

Ubuntu packages have been available for a while now:

Hardy packages have just been made available and there is now a PPA with them:

This seems the onle package/program/library that give support for AES1610 which is available in some Lenovo and Toshiba Portégé.

I tried before thinkfinger, which doesn't support AuthenTec devices, aes2510-wy which doesn't support AES1610.

The package provided by madman2k is not for the last version (0.0.6).

Unassigning mysqlf as this bug will be fixed with a simple sync from Debian.

Fprint is avaiable in Ubuntu Intrepid, for hardy feel free to use this PPA [1]

Emanuelle, what is the difference between your PPA and madman2k' s ?

Found madman2k links to be invalid, however all required packages are available (for Hardy) via standard Ubuntu apt backports entries (just remove comments and apt-get install them, etc).
