Bug Description

Name: mobile-media-converter

URL: http://www.miksoft.net/mobileMediaConverter.htm

Description:
The Mobile Media Converter is a free video and audio converter that uses ffmpeg to convert between popular desktop formats like MP3, Windows Media Audio (wma), Ogg Vorbis Audio (ogg), Wave Audio (wav), MPEG video, AVI, Windows Media Video (wmv), Flash Video (flv) and commonly used mobile phones formats like AMR audio (amr, awb) and 3GP video. Also, iPod/iPhone compatible MP4 video is also supported.

An integrated YoutTube downloader is available for direct downloading and converting to any of these formats!

The program has a very easy-to-use and simple GUI (Graphical User Interface) that helps even the most amateur user. Most of the times, the only data that you must enter is the input file(s) or just drag 'n' drop the input file(s)! The 3GP and AMR formats are used by mobile phones for MMS, for video and sound recordings, etc.

System Requirements (from the website):

Any x86-based Linux distribution with:
- GTK+ 2.8 (or higher)
- glibc-2.4 (or higher)
- libstdc++.so.6

Comments:

-Binary executable available
-Debian package for Ubuntu available
-It's licensed under the CC-GNU GPL version 2.0

Source code is available from the download page:

Someone should ask about the source code, because the linux archive is a bit weak :

certainly not a duplicate of #125835. However, #334947 is a duplicate of this one. BTW, I've already done a preliminary analysis of the package in the latter bug. For your convenience, I'm copying it here:

First analysis of the package:

 - no full sources. the linux binary tarball ships a bunch of binary libraries:
   - libfaac (already in ubuntu)
   - libmp3lame (too
   - libamrnb & libamrwb (both unredistributable - license of them do not permit it)
   - include a static copy of the 'ffmpeg' binary
 - the thing seems implemented in a weird language I don't know, perhaps basic or ruby, no idea.
 - then they claim of them were produced by them and claiming it GPL.

All in all pretty serious licensing issues. I've contacted the ffmpeg developers about that to engage legal action against them.

I see no chance to get that included into ubuntu in this form.

Just checked the website again, they still seem to violate quite a lot of foreign copyright by distributing binaries without full sources. And even if they did I have doubts that the libraries that they can can be legally combined in that way.

Perhaps libamrnb and libamrwb can be included in http://medibuntu.org/ From the looks of it, they are already looking into it: https://bugs.launchpad.net/~medibuntu-maintainers

unfortunately, the license does not allow free redistribution AFAIUI.

for medibuntu, they are of course free to ignore any laws not valid in france, but ubuntu targets more countries than that.

I think this bug can be closed as a solution is offered here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ffmpeg/+bug/93849/comments/54

@Reinhard: Then you sure haven't looked close enough. Mobile Media Converter is released under the GPLv2, so it is redistributable.
