Yeah, I would also like to see SciDAVis in Ubuntu. Though it is a fork of Qtiplot, which is already included, it is already different and - at least after my experience - more stable.

There are already Debian packages available under http://debian.physik.hu-berlin.de . Sometimes they need some modifying for use in Ubuntu though as some of the libs are named differently in Debian.

Description:
SciDAVis is a free application for Scientific Data Analysis and Visualization.

Mission Statement -

SciDAVis is an interactive application aimed at data analysis and publication-quality plotting. It combines a shallow learning curve and an intuitive, easy-to-use graphical user interface with powerful features such as scriptability and extensibility. SciDAVis runs on GNU/Linux, Windows and MacOS X; possibly also on other platforms like *BSD, although this is untested.

SciDAVis is similar in its field of application to proprietary Windows applications like Origin and SigmaPlot as well as free applications like QtiPlot, Labplot and Gnuplot.

What sets SciDAVis apart from the above is its emphasis on providing a friendly and open environment (in the software as well as the project) for new and experienced users alike. Particularly, this means that we will try to provide good documentation on all levels, ranging from user’s manual over tutorials down to and including documentation of the internal APIs We encourage users to share their experiences on our forums and on our mailing lists.

This might be obsolete by now, as labplot and scidavis are going to merge, see http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/forum.php?forum_name=labplot-devel .

That looks like an interesting project in its own right.

But a look at the SciDAVis website shows that the SciDAVis project is alive and well and has plans to continue well into the future.

No mention is made on the SciDAVis "About" page (Updated: 2008-09-09 21:44:04), of the project that is referred to on the forum you refer to.
This would be a good place to mention the merging together with another project, but it doesn't;
http://scidavis.sourceforge.net/about/index.html

SciDAVis will very likely be around for a few years yet, because they have just brought out version 0.2, and have a road map laid out through to version 1.0 "and beyond".
http://scidavis.sourceforge.net/about/roadmap.html

The visualization engine will get a revamp at version 0.5, but it doesn't mention labplot.

So it looks like SciDAVis is not going to be obsolete, and is instead likely to become more important.

Also the project you mention could be interesting to follow.
SciDAVis version 0.3 will include modular-ization of the program, so that might make it easier to build plugins for the SciDAVis, or to integrate features of SciDAVis in other programs (something open source products could be especially good at doing).

Please consider changing the title to something like ;
" [needs-packaging] SciDAVis - Scientific Data Analysis and Visualization tool"

so people can see a brief description of the type of program it is , without having to click to open up the bug report.
And for later when they might be selecting the program for installation.

Well' instead of simply packaging scidavis, may be it's clever to move scidavis to launchpad, given that launchpad+bazaar platform is actually far superior to sourceforge (imho). together with a lot of advantages, launchpad has also automatic .deb packages creation for all platforms....

Yeah, the development of Scidavis doesn't stop, indeed. There have been couple of new versions by now getting more and more independent from Qtiplot, which makes a packaging effort even more interesting...

yes, I find it more stable than qtiplot. Compilation instructions on the site are very good. At least the project is active which can't be said of alternatives like xmgrace.

I am packaging the current version (0.2.3) both for 32 and 64bits right now. Since I am a newbie to packaging it may take a while till you find the in the Ubuntu sources. But I'll make sure they will be available on the project homepage within a couple of days.

Instead of requesting a sync and consuming time from the ubuntu-archive team, we can wait two days (in two days scidavis will be migrated to testing) and then it will be synced automatically. Then we can close this bug. Thanks for your work.
