Bug Description

Please consider packaging Nestopia.

Nestopia is an open source NES/Famicom emulator designed to emulate the NES hardware as accurately as possible. Originally for Windows only, Nestopia has been ported to the Mac OS X and Linux operating systems.

(Core) source available here:
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=83320&package_id=85811

PR #5 Linux overlay source available here:
http://rbelmont.mameworld.info/nst137_lnx_preview_5.zip

Note: Both sources are needed. The core source must be extracted and then the "Linux overlay" source must be extracted into the same directory before compilation.

Thank you for your bug report. I'm marking this as triaged.

just a note of clarification for when & if this gets packaged...
it should be versioned "1.37~preview5" or something to that effect.

thanks!

I opened a bug about removing the old NES emulators which can be found currently in the repos: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/316782

Since there was no response to this bug since 2007 I will add the Ubuntu Universe Sponsors to this bug.

Note that there is a new Linux home for Nestopia here: http://rbelmont.mameworld.info/?page_id=200

To build NEStopia, you need two things:

The 1.40 core source and
The Linux 1.40 release H overlay source (which I attached to this post)

Unzip the core source, then unzip the Linux overlay source over it. Change to the directory you unzipped everything in and type “make”.

This should be the Source code for Nestopia. Remember that the Linux code from my post above has to be copied over before building.

A status update:

A debian package request was filed here: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=559563
But nobody stepped up to package the emulator.

Nestopia seems even to be abandoned by Martin Freij. Its last revision was released in 2007.

Currently our best bet is to wait for new revisions of FCEUX ("Family Computer Emulator Ultra Extended") which undergoes rapid development at the moment. FCEUX gets packaged regularily in Debian and thus is getting synced to Ubuntu.

The current release 2.1.3 even features a GTK GUI and working netplay but it isn't synced to Ubuntu yet (it is still 2.1.3). Even NTSC filters are on their TODO list as developer "adelikat" seems to tackle this task: http://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&aid=2808773&group_id=13536&atid=113536

While actually not totally related:
FCEUX 2.1.4 with the new GTK+ UI hit the repos for Maverick. It should even offer NTSC filters but I am not too sure that those are hooked up in the GTK+ UI already. See here: https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/maverick/+source/fceux/2.1.4a+repack-0ubuntu1

Nestopia seems to have being resurrected lately:

I think it's worth of being packaged in Ubuntu :)
