Bug Description

Dear all,

I had a problem login on Xwindows between Ubuntu 17.10 and Ubuntu 18.04.
In short after I type my login password on ubuntu I got following
behavior:
---The login screen disappear, I can see the pointer of the mouse.
After 3-5 s I am thrown back to the login screen.
---The login screen disappear, I can see the pointer of the text input.
I remain stuck here forever. However, I can access console windows
   by typing Ctrl-Alt F4
---The login happens normally (very rare, only 2 times).

I do not know what environment I use for login, whether it is KDE/Gnome/
LXDE/Unity, etc. Most likely it is is Unity or gnome. It used to be possible
to select the environment at runtime, but that is no longer possible.

It is not a password problem, since I can login to the shell normally.

Before this happened, I had in Ubuntu 17.10 some error messages saying that
my the screen resolution was not available or something of this kind but
I had the Xwindows environment anyway.

I tried to resolve the issue on "askubuntu", see
https://askubuntu.com/questions/1033535/cannot-login-with-upgraded-ubuntu-18-04
without success and Zanna recommended me to report the problem on launchpad.

The problem happened with the latest version of the ubuntu, i.e. after the
updates to gnome-session. The bug is a priori not related to X windows
since I have the login screen. It is after the login screen that problems
happen.

The computer is Dell Inspiron-5767.

I would be interested by ANY solution that allows me to work in graphic mode,
be it LXDE or whatever, but I do not know how to change this from the command
line. So far, I use tmux and screen and would like something better.

Thank you very much in advance for any help,

  Mathieu

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1770635/+editstatus and add the package name in the text box next to the word Package.

Thank you for indicating the bug as confirmed.
Some developments:
A) i could find how to switch from one environment to the next. Conclusion: problem is independent from gnome/unity/ whatever.
B) i created a test account "testacct" and could see the same problem occurring. Conclusion: the session management is not to blame, nor existing user files.
C) i copied the dmesg messages. It seems there is a problem with the graphic card. But i can't really say more.

For what I want i would be happy to have the graphical user interface working but slow.

Any help in resolving the problem would be much appreciated.

  Mathieu

PS: the dmesg output with the first line truncated.
