Reading on the internet this works on Fedora 9... I think the driver has been added within kernel 2.6.25.

Can we include this driver in the Ubuntu Hardy kernel?

I will go ahead and look into the nidswrapper. Did you end up using the XP driver or the newer Vista driver?

Thanks much,

Hi Guys,

Sorry this may have been getting overlooked since beginning with the Hardy development cycle kernel bugs should be reported against the "linux" package. This obviously is not known by everyone so sorry for any confusion and the delayed response.

It does appear the upstream kernel has the rtl8180 driver which also supports rtl8185 cards. The kernel team is actively pulling together the Intrepid Ibex 8.10 kernel which will contain this newer driver. It should be available to test in the near future. I'll try to update you when I see it is available. You could also attempt to build the upstream kernel if you're ambitious. I'm not positive if the kernel team will backport the driver to Hardy but I will reassign this bug report to them for their consideration. Thanks.

Ah, or better yet, try the 2.6.25 package one of the ubuntu kernel devs has available under their PPA:

Thanks.

so will the next kernel released on hardy have the fix?

I've got the same problem on the 64 bit version, and it's worse, because on the 32bit version this bug can be avoided using ndiswrapper and the oficial realtek drivers for winxp, but it doesn't work on 64 bit systems because of another bug on ndiwrapper.

Hi Shawn,

It would be good to get confirmation that the driver that exists upstream actually works for you. If you can test the Intrepid kernel which is already rebased with the upstream 2.6.25 kernel and contains the driver of interest that would be great:

http://ppa.launchpad.net/kernel-ppa/ubuntu/pool/main/l/linux/

It's up to the kernel team if they will backport for the Hardy 8.04.1 release. However, I doubt they'll do that without confirmation that the upstream driver works. At the very least, you'll have an option of running the Intrepid kernel which will provide support for you card (assuming the upstream driver works). Hope that helps. Thanks.

Note about rtl8187 patch,not shure is this corect in line 402
402 sg_set_page(&sg, virt_to_page(pos), len + 2, offset_in_page(pos));
and change'd it to len + 4 for rtl8185 please test it.

Tested on 32bit 2.6.24 kernel (slackware) and looks like it is working
More tests nedeed . Not tryed wpa_supplicant yet.

Anyone care to test with the latest Alpha release for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10? http://www.ubuntu.com/testing . It is based off a 2.6.26 kernel. If you still experience issues, can you attach the following debugging information:

* cat /proc/version_signature > version.log
* dmesg > dmesg.log
* sudo lspci -vvnn > lspci-vvnn.log

For more information regarding the kernel team bug policy, please refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies .

Also, I'm removing the linux-source-2.6.24 task since beginning with the Hardy development cycle kernel bugs should be reported against the 'linux' source package which this bug already is. Thanks.

If on Hardy - care to actually try installing the linux-backport-modules package and see if that helps. It contains the rtl8180 driver (which also supports rtl8185). Thanks.

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

I have been trying to get a "Logilink WL0002" to work. AFAIK it is also based on the 8185L chipset. It is an internal PCI-card.

I downloaded the Intrepid Beta last night and write this from the Intrepid-Beta Live-CD environment. From a fresh boot into the live CD environment "sudo lshw" gives me:

Per a decision made by the Ubuntu Kernel Team, bugs will longer be assigned to the ubuntu-kernel-team in Launchpad as part of the bug triage process. The ubuntu-kernel-team is being unassigned from this bug report. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies for more information. Thanks.
