Network settings can slowdown Ubuntu 7.10

Bug Description

If you have a wired connection and go to Network settings (System>Administrator>Network), then select the network and click on Properties, and then, in the General tab type an address (like 192.168.1.1) in the field Domain Name, your system will slow down to unseen limits! You won't believe how much it slows down. Just booting will take at least 10 minutes! And launchig an app will seem to take forever!

Thing is, if you go back and delete the Domain Name it just won't make any difference! The system will still be incredibly slow!

This has happened to me with both Ubuntu 7.10 and Ubuntustudio 7.10

I tried to replicate this "bug" on my install of Ubuntu 7.10 and could not cause the problem you describe.

Strange! It has happened to me on 3 occasions, consecutively. I had to
reinstall the system 4 times in 2 days. I'm damn sure of it.
Maybe it also depends on other factors like the hardware configuration or if
you also have another OS. In my case I have a double boot with Windows XP.
However, Windows is on a separate HDD.

Does this setting trigger a Dynamic DNS client? Maybe your system is hanging because it's trying -- unsuccessfully -- to locate and/or register with a DDNS server for that Domain Name.

I don't think that's the problem because I'm sure there's nothing wrong with that server. In all the occasions I was able to register with that DNS server. I was also successful in sending a ping to that server. The only thing I could not do is navigate using Firefox. So I thought the problem had to do with the network settings and added the address to the mentioned field. In all three occasions the system got slow the minute I did this.
The problem with Firefox was the already reported problem with ipv6 which I disabled in Firefox itself. It had nothing to do with the network settings. In fact, I'm writting this post from Ubuntustudio after disabling ipv6.
Maybe there is something else that has to be done to replicate this bug (if indeed there is such bug). The only other thing I recall I did, before filling the Domain Name, was setting a static connection.

I can replicate the problem this way:

If you have a wired connection with a gateway configured to access the internet, just
limit connectivity to internet and you will have a very slow system as you describe above.
This happens to me when I lose connectivity with my ISP provider. There is network but
don't have internet access because of modem connectivity.

Haven't found a solution yet and think that this bug should be marked with a bold red :)

is this still an issue with current releases? you should specify an affected package to get some attention...
