Note that a bitcoin package has been packaged earlier, but it was removed since it needed to be kept up to date with the larger bitcoin network. Please see https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/bitcoin/+publishinghistory and bug 1260602 for details.

The Bitcoin Core nodes are identified as the Satoshi user agent. As the list shows, new versions of Bitcoin Core can work with previous versions if there are no changes in the protocol. Only security fixes are required.
