Bug Description

I finally was able to recreate the problem.
My laptop is running Gutsy (though this problem also occurred with Fiesty).
Every time the system was idle for several hours, with nothing but screen saver running, the system froze completely.
No kbd/mouse/touchpad/ssh login from remote ... not even ping to the machine.
I though it might be a heating problem, but it turned out not to.
I checked it with a 3D game "TuxKart". I brought the system to 50 deg but still working.

Then I tried to run 2 GLXGears simultaneously.
I almost instantly caused the system to freeze (few seconds). Temperature at freezing point was 46 deg.
I did that check several times. It still is the case.

I saw a bug here related to large memory usage which causes the system to freeze, but I was not sure if this is the case.

Anyway, I can recreate the problem again.

some details about my machine:

LG laptop. Model F1.
cpu: Intel Core Duo T2350, 1.86 GHz
RAM: 2GB

Ok.
My apology.
I cannot recreate the bug.
The checked it for 3 consecutive times (each time running 2 GLXgears at the same time and each time I had to forcefully restart the system due to complete freezing).
But now I checked it again and I was able to run 6 GLXgears without any problem.

But the system still freezes after long period of idle (screensaver).

Oh well ... back to the drawing board.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Please answer these questions:
- can you please check if your system also freezes when the screensaver is completely switched off (In Screensaver Preferences, switch off Activate screensaver when computer is idle)?
- can you please check if your system also freezes when you select a blank screen as the screensaver theme?

For the first question - I will check it.
For the second question - The answer is yes.
When the screen saver is set to blank screen, the system also freezes.

Currently, I am doing a test to check for display driver defect.
The previous driver was the intel experimental driver (comes with Gutsy).
Now I am checking it with vesa driver.
My test is very simple:
I switched to vesa driver and I will let the computer run solo (no human interference) for 3 days (the entire weekend).
If it won`t freezes, then I will have to start searching for a more stable driver.
If it freezes ... I will be very sad.

thank you for your help.

This sounds very familiar: my laptop (MSI S260 = intel 915GM chipset) also freezes when going into screensaver mode. I have the same driver (intel experimental).
Now with screensaver off and tunrining off the fearture of switching monitor off after idling (thus my monitor being permanently turned on), the freezes are gone.

How about your weekend kopolov? Did it freeze up?

Ok, I just did a little check, my laptop doesn't freeze when going into screensaver mode, but only when it goes into power saving mode (put display to sleep when inactive for ... minutes).
Would I be better of opening a new bugreport? I'm not sure if our bugs are related. And I'm not really certain how to debug this. (me = n00b, I need some guidance here)

During the weekend I did one more test (sad to say it ...)
I reinstaled the Win Vista that came with the laptop.
The test was made to make sure there is no hardware malefunction whatsoever.
And as it turned out ... the hardware is fine. Working properly with Win Vista.
So ... once I`ll reinstll Gutsy, I`ll go back to my testing again.

What's that, Win Vista? Where can I download that distribution? LOL

Well ... now that I know my hardware is working properly, its time to go back to Gutsy.
I spoke with my brother and he said that maybe this crash happens because I also have trouble with my wirreless driver on the laptop.
He suggested to try a work around for the wireless and see if this work.
The work around is to use ndis-wrapper tool to install the window driver for the wireless.
I hope this works and the crashes will end.
