LiveCD Gnome desktop desperately needs an IO load meter

Bug Description

I've run the Hoary live CD on a 400MHz PPC blue / white macintosh with ~ 200Mb RAM.

Launching OpenOffice takes about ten to fifteen minutes, during which I get
almost no visual feedback. What the system is doing AFAICT from "top" on a text
console is waiting for the CD.

Since the Live CD is so slow, some kind of feedback telling the user that the
system is waiting for the CD is needed. I think a GNOME applet that visualizes
IO activity would be good for this.

I'm rejecting this on the grounds that there is a panel applet for Breezy, Dapper and Edgy (and i'm sure in warty+hoary) that allows you to view io/load/cpu useage.
right click panel -> add to panel -> system monitor.
