Bug Description

I have Gutsy running on an INTEL D201GLY with a 1440x900 LCD screen

This Intel motherboard uses an SIS662 chip set with integrated graphics

Installation seemed to work OK except that the graphics is very noisy and breaks up

I read somewhere that you can get the noise to go away by running

sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg and selecting Vesa drivers

The noise goes away, but picture is fuzzy because the max resolution is 1024x768

The target resolution of 1440x900 does not appear to be supported

Any ideas?

Denis

Hi Nanley.

Thanks for your quick response. I am new to Ubuntu, and so if I did not
frame this bug report properly, I'm sorry. The graphics driver that Ubuntu
selected for the SIS662 does not work properly. Would you please take the
time to explain to me why that is not a bug?

Thanks

Denis

I think this should be reopened. I've added a link to the upstream bug about the same issue.

There are some patches from SiS at http://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=9409, but apparently the upstream maintainer wasn't too satisfied with the quality of the code. Hopefully some progress will be made at some point...

Dear Eetu,

Thanks for letting me know. I don't feel quite so stupid now as when my bug
report was dismissed by Nanley Chery.

Is there some prospect this might get fixed one day? The SiS guy seems to
be busy with another project

Regards,

Denis

The driver remains buggy, problem is either with asynchronous memory read from the graphics card or masking problem, who knows? At 768x576 @ 60Hz resolution the screen is almost undistorted, but at the resolution the Ubuntu 8.04 was trying to install (1600x1200?) it was close to impossible to navigate on the screen.

This may be a problem with the double-buffering or anything to do with memory access.

The distortion works this way:
some line address ranges get confused, so that whole columns may appear on a second location.

Even worse thing happened after I took the photo. I am not able to switch monitor resolution from the 1280x1024 to anything else!
