gnome should give feedback when localhost is down

Bug Description

I slightly messed up my /etc/network/interfaces, but never realized that that was the reason that gnome was not starting. KDE, XFCE4 and icewm were working fine. If localhost has to be up for gnome, it should at least give back feedback to the user that it is down. Right now it just stops, showing an empty screen with a cursor, leaving the user unaware of what the problem is.

I found the bug by doing strace gnome-terminal from konsole.

Please use brainstorm.ubuntu.com to submit this idea. I'm not sure if gnome should tell you what you've messed up in your system.
