Bug Description

Ubuntu MATE is an Ubuntu derivative that provides the MATE desktop environment. MATE is the continuation of GNOME2.

A new application for MATE Desktop has been developed called `mate-hud`. It provides functionality similar to the Unity 7 HUD.

URL: https://bitbucket.org/ubuntu-mate/mate-hud
License: GPL
Notes: I've discussed the addition of mate-hud to the Ubuntu MATE packageset with Robie Basak.

[needs-packaging] mate-hud

The source and documentation is available from the following repository:

  * https://bitbucket.org/ubuntu-mate/mate-hud

The Debian package can be found here:

A .dsc can be downloaded from ppa:ubuntu-mate-dev/crazy-mate using:

    dget -u -x https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-mate-dev/+archive/ubuntu/crazy-mate/+files/mate-hud_16.10.0-1~yakkety1.2.dsc

This is the discussion Robie Basak and I had on IRC at ~ 15:32 on 12 July 2016.

<rbasak> flexiondotorg: mate-hud> do you have a link to our previous discussion please?
<flexiondotorg> rbasak, Maybe. I'll go hunting...
<rbasak> flexiondotorg: sorry I don't remember it. I believe that we discussed it, but I'd like to remind myself of any context.
    <flexiondotorg> rbasak, My question: https://irclogs.ubuntu.com/2016/07/01/%23ubuntu-devel.html#t08:24
    <flexiondotorg> rbasak, You're reply - https://irclogs.ubuntu.com/2016/07/01/%23ubuntu-devel.html#t10:18
    <rbasak> flexiondotorg: thanks!
    <flexiondotorg> Or Your reply even.
    <rbasak> flexiondotorg: looks like I don't know what I'm doing, sorry :-/
<rbasak> flexiondotorg: I thought MATE was a set automatically generated from the seed, but it's not in https://bitbucket.org/ubuntu-mate/mate-hud
    <rbasak> Uh, not in http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~developer-membership-board/+junk/packageset/view/head:/packageset-report
<flexiondotorg> Yeah, I saw that. Derived from the seeds.
<rbasak> flexiondotorg: I need to run, but I'll try and look again later and ask around for help. If I drop the ball, please ping me, or if you add it to the agenda before Monday's meeting, we can give someone an action to take care of it so we don't forget.
    <flexiondotorg> rbasak, OK. Thanks.
<rbasak> flexiondotorg: +1 from me to add mate-hud to the MATE packageset, as it's obviously MATE only. So you don't need any more approval - I just don't know how to do it right now exactly.
<rbasak> flexiondotorg: I'm also not sure what to do give it doesn't exist yet. You might need it sponsoring in so that it exists, then a seed change sponsored to seed it, and then the packagesets regenerated or something.
    <rbasak> *given
    <flexiondotorg> Understood.
<rbasak> flexiondotorg: I'm stuck for time today, but I'd be happy to sponsor it for you tomorrow regardless of what we do about permissions in order to unblock you if that would be helpful.
    <flexiondotorg> Thanks!

Hi Martin,

I haven't done a thorough review, but here are three packaging issues that I think need addressing:

Does mate-hud have an "upstream"? If so, then why is it a native package?

The top-level LICENSE file says MIT, so why is there no mention of MIT in
debian/copyright?

As the main program being shipped is a Python program, I'd expect the Debian
Python Policy to be followed here. Perhaps section 4.2.1 applies, but that
still requires byte-compilation in the postinst.

Thanks for the feedback Robie. As discussed in IRC I've corrected the top-level LICENSE, the package now adheres to Debian Python Policy and the package is now also non-native.

Also, I'll unsubscribe ~ubuntu-sponsors since the sponsors job is done here I think.
