Bug Description

Yesterday I upgraded from (an up-to-date) Feisty to Gutsy. Since then, quite often a key release event seems to get lost, so that the system thinks the key is still pressed and then key repeat usually wreaks havoc.
So far this problem only occured in Opera, but it is most likely not an Opera bug, since under Feisty I used 9.22-20070716.6 and the problem never occured. I then upgraded to 9.24-20071015.6feisty1, and the system upgrade then installed 9.24-20071015.6gutsy1. Here the problem occurs.
However, I downgraded now to 9.22-20070716.6 using opera_9.22-20070716.6-shared-qt_en_i386.deb from the Opera site, and the problem *still* occurs.

More hints:
- Even with ctrl-w (=closing a tab in Opera), the problem occurs, although here there should be two key releases involved and a ctrl-w key repeat should only occur if both release events fail simultaneoulsy, correct?
- It is also not a keyboard problem, I tried both a wireless and a standard keyboard.

Since I heavily rely on keyboard shortcuts in Opera, this problem is quite unnerving. Please tell me what other info I can give to help reproducing or isolating this problem.

Followup: It seems the key release event doesn't get lost completely, but it's evaluation is delayed for several seconds (the equivalent about 5-30 key repeats at the default setting): even when no other key is pressed, only these 5-30 key commands are processed (the amount varies), then it settles down on its own.

Another followup: it is definitely *not* an Opera bug, I just had the same phenomenon with another application (xnview).

This bug is *totally* annoying, it really impedes work. Isn't there something that can be done? I'll take anything - workarounds, things to try, etc. Can anybody reproduce this?
Do you need more info?
I am using a standard setup, therefore Gonme/gdm/metacity. Kernel is 2.6.22-14-386

My sincere thanks for any help :-(

Sorry for always replying to my own bug, but I have more info, and I am getting really confused now:
I disabled key repeat using the gnome-keyboard-properties tool, and it seemed to work for a while. But suddenly the problem reappeared, key repeat was *reenabled*, although running gnome-keyboard-properties showed it was still disabled.
I did not run any other tools or utilities at the time, just normal usage of Opera.
Checking and unchecking key repeat in gnome-keyboard-properties disabled it again - for the time being...

I think I have exactly the same problem here. I upgraded to Gutsy on last Sunday, and quite soon the problem started. It mainly happens to me in Firefox, but sometimes also in other programs. (I have the feeling that the problem appears more frequently in applications which have a high CPU usage, such as Firefox...) Once it even happend in the task switch dialog (alt+tab).
It's really annoying, and I hate deactivating key repeat (though I'll try it now, as the bug is even more annoying).

uname -a
Linux felix 2.6.22-14-386 #1 Sun Oct 14 22:36:54 GMT 2007 i686 GNU/Linux

I'm also using a standard setup (with gnome).

I am encountering the same problem here. Very rare (happens only a couple of times per day), but it just re-occurred while deleting messages in my Inbox in evolution. Grrr.
