description: gCAD3D is 3D-CAD/CAM software with Step import, IGES import/export, DXF import/export, VRML import/export, STL import/export, a programming interface and scripting language.

url: http://www.gcad3d.org/

license: gCAD3D is freeware
- may be used for any purposes free of costs
- may be copied and distributed without restrictions
- no restrictions for AddOn-Software (Plugins, DDL's)

remarks: Offer also gcad3d-models that contains all the 3D models offered via the website. This package has no dependency on gcad3d, only a suggestion for it because other CAD software can also work with these models.

It's "freeware" however I don't see any source code available to compile it myself, I tried running the download however there are problems because it's looking for a dependency in the wrong place (I already have it installed). This kind of thing could be avoided if I have the ability to compile it myself. If the source code is available then great, however I only see a binary.

With that being said, with only a binary it's going to be a complete pain to maintain this thing. I suggest you go to the author and convince him or her to release the source code under any license they like then put in a request to package it in Debian (then add the request status here). When Debian adds it, Ubuntu will pull it from Debian when they next take a snapshot of unstable.

I found the source code.

Anyway, like I said, your best bet is to put in a packaging request at Debian.

Interesting, looks a bit like work, but do-able... keep an eye on http://sid.ethz.ch/debian/gcad3d/
writing an RFP bug report against debian would be a good start.

There's 2.40 out now, but I give up on the build system...
cd src/APP; ./do complete seems to build it successfully
