Bug Description

Hi,

I installed Gutsy couple of days back. Since then, I haven't been
able to switch to any of the virtual consoles. When I try to
switch to the virtual consoles, I just get a black screen or some random
  colored pixels throughout the screen.

If I run compiz, and switch back to X, system freezes. If i'm running
metacity, then there's no freeze and I can work in X.

  My system:
  Dell D610,
  Intel Pentium M 1.73GHz
  1 GB RAM,
   ATI mobility video card,
  (using ati driver)

This issue was not there in Fiesty and I was using ati driver there as well.
This is a fresh install of Gutsy, not an upgrade.

Can you try to close the laptop lid and open it again? It may solves the problem.

@Guillaume -- That doesn't help.

However, I figured out what had caused the issue.

When i add 'vga=791' to the kernel boot options, this happens.
If I remove this part, it works well. I think the virtual console
is not able to handle the resolution.
