Screen is blank on lid open

Bug #155614 reported by bmomjian on 2007-10-22
Affects Status Importance Assigned to Milestone

Bug Description

I am using a Thinkpad T43 running Ubuntu 7.10 with all current updates, Gnome/compiz defaults. I have configured Power Management to "Do nothing" when I close the lid. If I leave the laptop lid shut for a 15 seconds and the open it, about 25% of the time the screen is off/black and pressing keys does not change that. (The laptop is still running because I can still hear music playing.)

If I close the lid and open it again, the screen is now lit but still black. If I close the lid and open it a third time the screen restores normally. I can also confirm that the Control-Alt 6 and 7 does restore the screen on first lid open, but that is hardly user-friendly.

I can no longer reproduce this bug so it must have been fixed in a recent update.

This bug is still valid, I can confirm it for my ThinkPad R50e.
I guess it is a bug in the display driver from Intel, but it is _really_ horrible to me because I often close and open up the laptop lid.

The VGA compatible controller is (taken from lspci):
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82852/855GM Integrated Graphics Device (rev 02)

I now tested to switch to another display driver in the xorg.conf.
It seems the driver "intel" is not affected by this bug (maybe an update fixed this), but the driver "i810" is affected by it.

I'm closing this bug as the reporter said it's fixed for him and Gutsy has reached EOL a while ago. Please report any other bugs you may find! Thanks
@Marc: If you still have this bug, please file a new one with 'ubuntu-bug xserver-xorg-video-intel' as that will add some debugging information to the bug. Thanks!
