Video playback is distorted using xvideo output extension. Choosing X11 enables working video playback, audio playback is working fine.

I updated this morning, and this is when I got the problem with the video.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Unfortunately we can't fix it, because your description didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful to read "How to report bugs effectively" [WWW] http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems. [WWW] http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures

At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

All video playback is distorted, both VLC and Totem.

Please see screenshots in link:

After update, totem using GNOME "standard" video sink and VLC using XVideo:

With X11 output (expected):

Neither is reporting any errors in terminal during playback.

Hi there,
At first sight i can't identify the culprit, could you please give me a little more information about your system?, for instance which version of the nvidia driver, libxv1, xserver, gnome, etc, are you using. Do you have desktop effects activated?, are you using gutsy or feisty?, if you use
nv driver instead of nvidia in your xorg.conf, does the same happens?, if you have mplayer installed and launch from command line with the "-vo xv" parameter, does the same happens?.
i guess the distortion could be caused by another application accessing the xv extension, since only one can use the feature at the time, but i'm just guessing. You could try to reproduce a video without any other program opened, just to confirm this, this is as soon as you login.

thanks in advance.

The same problem is present here. The distortion looks as if the screen is updating too slowly, or not synchronized to the refresh rate. That is, you see parts of the old picture and part of the new picture at the same time.

The problem only occurs when compiz is enabled (no matter if normal or extra effects).

The problem occurs in all programs using xvideo, mplayer -vo xv included.

mplayer -vo x11 works, but it doesn't support fullscreen, so it's useless.

I supply version information below.

ii compiz 1:0.6.0+git20071004-0ubuntu2 OpenGL window and compositing manager
ii libgnome2-0 2.20.0-1ubuntu4 The GNOME 2 library - runtime files
ii libxv1 2:1.0.3-1ubuntu1 X11 Video extension library
ii mplayer 2:1.0~rc1-0ubuntu12 The Ultimate Movie Player For Linux
ii nvidia-glx 1:1.0.9639+2.6.22.4-13.6 NVIDIA binary XFree86 4.x/X.Org driver
ii xserver-xorg 1:7.2-5ubuntu12 the X.Org X server

The bug is fully present, and i am experiencing it all the time i use ubuntu. Compiz - latest from the repos, nvidia driver - 169.12.

Though it doesn't look like this anymore:

http://origami.nu/bilder/gutsy/vlc.XV.png

The players just crash when using XVideo and that's all.
