[Gutsy] Update fails to install "linux-restricted-modules-generic"

Bug Description

Update of 5/10/07 fails to install "linux-restricted-modules-generic" from 2.6.22.12.17 to 2.6.22.13.18. This driver is "grayed" out in the list of updates; it can not be checked for installation.

This may also have something to do with this update preventing Samsung 243T LCD (1920x1200) resolution using NVIDIA proprietary driver. Can no longer get 1920x1200 screen res, nor can I open program to check for restricted drivers. From 'Terminal', Synaptic will not permit installation of the 'linux restricted module generic' and pops up a screen which says:

"Could not mark all packages for installation or upgrade. The following packages have unresolvable dependencies. Make sure that all the required repositories are added and enabled in the preferences.

linux-restricted-modules-generic:
Depends: linux-restricted-modules 2.6.22-13 generic but it is not installable."

Same problem here with a Thinkpad R51. I plugged in eth0 for now, but will try rebooting with the old kernel. Nice to see a bug report so quickly, but hopefully this can be resolved quickly (I've got a Thinkpad X22 I'm afraid to reboot now after the .13 kernel update).

To Sean:
my thinkpad is fine, when I reboot on .12 an earlier version. The issue seems to be that the .18 install is 'stalled', greyed out, and when i tried to access the restricted driver manager, that manages the Thinkpad Intel wireless card, I go the answer, that it needs .18. So I conclude the issue is the stalled install of 'restricted Linux Modules for Generic Kernels' from 2.6.22.12.17 to 2.6.22.13.18

Yeah, switching back to .12 kernel version at boot worked fine for me with the wireless driver. The Atheros driver is the only restricted one I use, so going back to .12 for other restricted modules may not work.

Almost the same here, switching back to .12 kernel gets wireless back up and mostly sane video... stuck at 1024x768 rather than 1440x900 but much better than 800x600 <shudder> or 640x480.

Same problem here. The packet "linux-restricted-modules-generic" shows up as broken and booting stops short of X.
I've found a different behaviour in Ubuntu and Kubuntu.

1- Laptop with Kubuntu amd64
No way to get into X. Rebooting and starting the previous kernel finds everything in place. Maybe - yet not tested - fixing xorg.conf to use nv non restricted driver should work and let me go through.

2- Desktop with Ubuntu amd64
Boot stops before X and tells me to reconfigure xorg.conf. Done that, I got in. No more 3D of course as linux-restricted-modules-generic is not there anymore.
Going back to the previous kernel and trying to rehabilitate 3D tells me I've got no more nvida-restriced driver and asks me to download it. In examining xorg.conf I found that my LCD screen is not recognized anymore and a generic is set. Scrolling the list to get the right one, while reconfiguring, shows my screen is not listed anymore. Not a big deal as generic works fine, it seems, but it makes wonder...

Same thing happened to me on a Compaq Desktop with flat monitor and NVIDIA 7600. It was working beautiful with .12 but when got updated to .13 I couldn't get the right resolutions and not even the right nvidia driver.
I hope this get resolved quickly.

as on the other I also confirm on a Dell 4600i running Nvidia Fx5200 with the Nvidia binary i can get a gui at least on mine because i mved the xorg to rexorg.conf and that way it uses the the nvidia glx or whatever from the distro, i prob. can get higher res by screen resolution, however then prob. My taskbar will get messed up when I do so and all gets returned to normal..

So i'm a confirmer.

:(

last time this happened it was there however now I always know to check restricted drivers manager the program and if it throws up that error then i know what's wrong. I did do a re-check since last time I did was hours ago and well nope still no go..

All,

Please reboot and go back into 2.6.22.12 kernel in the grub menu....this
will give you back your NVIDIA driver and WIFI connection. When
linux-restricted-modules-2.6.22-13-generic is installed in updates then
you can use 2.6.22.13 kernel.

I have experienced this problem as well with the latest updates.

The "nvidia" drivers fail.

The restricted drivers manager will not start stating "You need to install the package linux-restricted-modules-2.6.22-13-generic for this program to work."

Attempting to mark an upgrade from linux-restricted-modules-generic 2.6.22.12.17 to 2.6.22.13.18 in Synaptic fails with an error message "linux-restricted-modules-generic: Depends: linux-restricted-modules-2.6.22-13-generic but it is not installable"

I have reverted to the "nv" driver for the present, awaiting another update.

I have the same problem. Using nv works but without 3D, so I use kernel .12 with nvidia awaiting new update. These are the kinds of mistakes that will drive people back to Vista/XP if they try out Ubuntu, so please try not to break stuff like this with updates.

well actually this is in BETA still so as long as they don't pull this stunt with any Official releases then that's alright to a degree if it's a mistake. Official releases come first in consideration than BETA releases. Still however compared to at least XP the BETA is more stable than again an official release of Any Microsoft windows version I at least tried. ;) Which was WFW, 95,95,98SE, ME, XP.....
