gutsy can't read self-burned discs

Bug Description

My CD-R/RW drive can't read any burned images from music, data, and ISO files.

I used Gnomebaker, k3b (w/ check verify on), and nautilus -- all apps burn discs perfectly on slow speeds and maximum. On completion, I put the CD back in the drive to check if my files are there. The drive tried to read but then it suddenly went quite. I double clicked the CD drive and this came up, "Unable to mount media. -_ There is probably no media in the drive. " Before this event, I burned many CDs successfully. I made many CDs of different types: ISOs, music etc..

I went to check the CDs on Windows and my friends Feisty setup and and both read them successfully. My gutsy on my laptop seems to be the only one that cannot =/. I can't see the files I burned, but my drive can read other CDs I have burned from Ubuntu feisty before upgrading to gutsy.

btw, I tried burning a CD-RW (Imation), and gutsy thought it was an empty CD on more than one occasion. I'm buying Sony discs today. I hope this problem isn't caused by recent updates. My understanding is that Ubuntu can't mount a DVD in a CD ROM drive. So I think my install of gutsy can't read its own media. Is this even bug a possibility?

After discussing this problem with you on the #ubuntu irc channel last night in detail.

I believe this is not a bug and your drive actually has a fault.

Unless you can provide evidence that your drive is working beyond "it used to work" I suggest this bug be closed.

I hope you don't mind Crozar, but I updated your description to make it easier to read. I believe I had this same problem too, but I am not sure if it still exists. I'll test within the next week or two.

Travis , this problem happened with feisty as well , i reviewed myself again , i see that all the cd's i tried we'er the same Brand imation , which i guess my drive is an old 2001 laptop S801 Toshiba , and that drive been theyr along time , i tried sony cd's and it works :)

so maybe its my drive its old drive

and i need powerful cd to have them read aswel on it ,

i tried burning the imation cd's on a PC! then try them on my laptop on FEISTY and it gives me same error .

but Sony works overral,
i believe i must change the drive i had somebody in IRC say maybe ur drive is dead.

because i covered up all alternative equations for such a bug , so he gave me the last clue , drive might be dead !, in my words its weak! :(
oh well ...

People if you have a CD R / RW drive that cant read some cd's either way ~! then its YOUR DRIVE!
Change drive or Get Sony cd's or any other brand ((( some imation cd works , but the imation Green cover CD's dont work lol )))

sorry for this bug post , either way my drive might need some firmware things ect.. hopefully the last version of ubuntu * 8.04 will have something for these kinds of situations :D
