Bug Description

I have the same problem with either 2.6.20-16-generic or 2.6.22-12-generic kernels
When I plug a zd1201 USB dongle, the device isn't recognized :

usb 1-2: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 14
[ 104.732000] usb 1-2: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice
[ 105.204000] usb 1-2: <NULL>: rx urb failed: -84
[ 105.204000] zd1201: probe of 1-2:1.0 failed with error -5
[ 105.204000] usb 1-2: device_add(1-2:1.0) --> -5

It used to be okay. Sometimes the device works, after pluging it quite a lot of times, quite randomly.

It's okay now with 2.6.20-16 (thanks to some update). But I can't use 2.6.22-1x kernels.

Still buggy with the 2.6.24-18 kernel. Works great with 2.6.24-12 though...
Anybody ?

Narrowing the problem with the 2.6.24-19-generic kernel :
booting with "acpi=off" option solves the problem. Without this option, pluging the devices fails.

Hi Djainette,

Thanks for all the testing and the continued feedback. The upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 is actively being developed. Care to confirm this is still an issue with the latest Alpha for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10. You should be able to test via a LiveCD - http://www.ubuntu.com/testing. Please let us know your results. Thanks.

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

Thank ou, Leann.
I've installed the 2.6.27-2 kernel and tried to plug the device without acpi :

[ 222.404189] usb 2-1: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 104
[ 222.572042] usb 2-1: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice
[ 222.576033] firmware: requesting zd1201.fw
[ 223.301235] usb 2-1: <NULL>: rx urb failed: -84
[ 223.308029] zd1201: probe of 2-1:1.0 failed with error -5

The firmware is installed (deb package) and works with the 2.6.24-21 kernel.

Still having system soft lock when inserting/booting with the dongle (had to copy zd1201.fw manually because it did not come with the kernel)

I don't know if a patch has been released, but since a few days, the connection seems to drop almost immediatly. I tried migrating to Intrepid to see if things were better with the latest distro, but they're not.
Each time I do a ifup, a get a few bytes before I loose the connection. To get a single html page, I need to do one of two ifdown/ifup. It gets really annoying... (posting from XP right now)

The ubuntu-kernel-team is being unassigned from this bug report. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies for more information. Thanks.

Did the issue get better/worse/the same with the latest Jaunty beta? Could you provide the output of lsusb -vvv?
