Bug Description
When asked, did I want to install upgrade, I selected "Yes" and was subsequently confronted by a frozen computer. After shutting down the system and restarting, I found it ended up with a blank screen and a frozen keyboard. So, the only thing to do was to shut down by holding the power button for six seconds. Upon restarting, I was confronted with multiple warnings of various programs failing to start or malfunctioning, and suggesting that reports be filed.

udev's preinst only has some standard autogenerated debhelper code, mostly related to the ancient sysvinit->upstart migration. So this rather looks like some random error induced by a memory or hard disk problem? Can you please run a memory test (grub boot menu) and file system check (also in grub boot menu, under "rescue mode")?
