not audio playback when I play anything on ubuntu

my problem is that I can hear sound on any player Totem,Mplayer, VLc, et.I just started using ubuntu last week so I'm still a newby, I have been following the how to pages on the internet but wtill can't find the problembefore I could here sound but could not see any video . now is backwards I can see video but not audio including MP3 files I get the same error on every player "no sound/device" someone help please.

there is something strange when I play videos on firefox like on You tube they play well with sound so I don't really know what's the issue.

Is this still an issue? What Ubuntu version are you using? Please attach the output of you lspci -vv !
