Bug Description

Occasionally some aspect of my sound system locks up: Multimedia applications freeze on start (rhythmbox, totem, mplayer, Flash), seemingly trying to initialize the soundsystem.

Example of running mplayer with -msglevel all=9
==========================================================================
Building audio filter chain for 44100Hz/2ch/s16le -> 0Hz/0ch/??...
[libaf] Adding filter dummy

[dummy] Was reinitialized: 44100Hz/2ch/s16le

alsa-init: using ALSA 1.0.14a
alsa-init: setup for 1/2 channel(s)
alsa-init: using device default
========================================================================== The application freezes at this point. No sound is produced, mplayer does not exit, nothing seems to be using the CPU abnormally.

After SIGINT

Very similar issue and HW. All applications freeze up when using ALSA. However, far from intermittently, it now happens every time.
Will attach my specs as well.

Key and fan issues in dmesg are on the "to handle" list - not related to this I believe.
I had the keymappings in Feisty actually, then accidentally wiped 'em in the update

So yeah, not much more to add in detail.
mplayer -ao oss works
mplayer -ao alsa freezes in ao2_init

Firefox freezes, instant a flash video is opened.

Basically identical to doclist's report - any suggestions for repair would be appreciated.

Hi,

Can you test and see if this behaviour still occurs on Hardy? A lot of
fundamental changes have been made to the sound system (patches,
reworking, transition to pulseaudio, etc.). Thanks.

Nenolod! Been a while.
Well. This system is about 3k miles from me at the moment.
Teensy bit nervous about remote updates to beta versions, but will try a local upgrade first to reassure me.
I may also be able to prevail on my mom to bring it with her in a couple of weeks.

Anyway, gimme a bit.

Greetings,

It's been a long time indeed. Well, that's fantastic. As long as you use
"upgrade-manager -d" it should work remotely. Hope you can get the
problem fixed though.

So, I ran upgrade-manager -d as a test on a laptop sitting in front of me instead of with a good chunk of the planet between us...
And now it says that it can't find the hard disc.
So, going to defer doing it to my mom's machine 'till I figure out what happened.

Fixed in Hardy, upgraded mom's machine, everything is fine. Well, the hardy update was a little rocky, but she rebooted ok.
FYI, aforementioned local laptop was failing to boot 2.6.24 - 2.6.22 booted fine.
... then again, the local laptop was also freezing without acpi=off soo, not best case for comparing. Damn Gateway MX3412.
