Bug Description

I have an Asus F9s Laptop I can't get any sound what so ever out of the speakers or headphones.

I installed both Feisty and the latest Gutsy (2.6.22-11) but in neither can I get the sound to work. The hardware is 82801H ICH8 Revision 3 - ALC861 playback device.

Looking through bug reports I see similar reports but either with slightly different hardware or fixes that don't work for me.

I have tried a fix found here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-source-2.6.22/+bug/122560/comments/40

I have tried both the latest alsa and also the alsa from the dev tree.

I have tried the python sound hack.

The mixer is all the way up. All speaker stuff including front is not muted and set to 100%.

Because I dual boot XP I tried the method of unplugging the power - which is a fix for some people.

Tried acpi=ht =off in grub. Reset the bios. Ermm - pretty much tried every method I have found :)

in dmesg I see this:

[ 24.144000] ALSA /usr/src/modules/alsa-driver/pci/hda/../../alsa-kernel/pci/hda/hda_intel.c:558: hda_intel: azx_get_response timeout, switching to polling mode...

and

[ 24.616000] Asus Laptop ACPI Extras version 0.30
[ 24.616000] BSTS called, 0x9ffe returned
[ 24.616000] unsupported model F9S, trying default values
[ 24.616000] send /proc/acpi/dsdt to the developers

So I guess I will attach it to this post.

Wow finally got this working for my Asus F9s.

After all the different hacks - reverting to the current Alsa driver. 1.0.14-1ubuntu1
and editing /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base and adding the line:

options snd-hda-intel model=lenovo

at the end of the file

Reboot and sound is working. Also make sure the headphone option is checked in your mixer. And PCM and Front is all the way up and unmuted.

Credit to french forum (note: lenovo is incorrectly written as lenevo):
