Bug Description

Upgraded ubuntu 12 to 14, nVidia screen drivers were removed as being obsolete. Pc is now unbootable even in low graphics mode. Unable to access hard drive, email, documents etc. It was as effective as the worst pc virus. How can I get it to boot and replace screen drivers?

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but this appears to be a "regular" (non-security) bug. I have unmarked it as a security issue since this bug does not show evidence of allowing attackers to cross privilege boundaries nor directly cause loss of data/privacy. Please feel free to report any other bugs you may find.

Marc,

I have installed another ubuntu 14.04 filesystem onto a USB memory stick
and can boot from that, but I cannot retrieve some of my files from the
hard drive for backing up before re-installing 14.04 onto the hard disk
which will wipe everything on it. Do you have any suggestions of how I
might do this? It seems to be a matter of permissions on files and
folders which I cannot change as I am not able to su to root without the
password.

To give you a better picture of my setup, I have a HP Pavilion dv5
Entertainment Notebook laptop. It has a 320 GB hard drive and an Nvidia
GE Force 9200M GS graphics card.

I understand it is not a security issue, but there is something in the
upgrade scripts which caused this problem and that is what needs to be
addressed and remedied. If this was my only pc I would not be able to
report the problem to you, so there may be other users out there who are
in that position and who require the remedy as well.

Regards,

Robert.

R.F. Noonan, we are sorry that we do not always have the capacity to review all reported bugs in a timely manner. You reported this bug some time ago and there have been many changes in Ubuntu since that time.

Presumably this problem was a one time occurrence and/or is no longer an issue? Due to the amount of time that has elapsed and the versions of Ubuntu involved, can this bug report now be closed?

If we do not hear from you the bug report will close itself in approximately 60 days time.

Thank you again for helping make Ubuntu better.
