Bug Description

With the 64-bit Vagrant precise 20140807 image:
http://cloud-images.ubuntu.com/vagrant/precise/

I get this message on login:
Your current Hardware Enablement Stack (HWE) is no longer supported
since 2014-08-07. Security updates for critical parts (kernel
and graphics stack) of your system are no longer available.

Installed kernel version is 3.8.0-44-generic .

Also, note that for some reason linux-headers-generic (precise HWE stack) is still installed.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1354839/+editstatus and add the package name in the text box next to the word Package.

I have confirmed that this issue exists and I am working on a solution that includes moving from linux-generic-lts-raring to linux-generic-lts-trusty.

Keep in mind that these boxes do have the VirtualBox guest extensions installed. The guest extensions are needed for being used with Vagrant.

If you have to revert to the precise HWE stack to make the guest extensions work, that's fine with me.

Michael, you're correct and I hadn't tested on trusty hwe kernel before posting comment #2. I am working on a solution for a supported kernel that works with the virtualbox guest dkms package.

While not the ideal solution, I have reverted the kernel back to the 3.2 kernel, which is supported. I should never have moved to the 3.8 kernel, but at the time it actually fixed a bunch of use-cases which now are fixed by using the 14.04 boxes. Moving forward, we will not be using the HWE kernel for Vagrant boxes.

Marking as fix released.

I tested the new boxes, and there were no regressions for my use case. :)
