Bug Description

Gutsy Herd 4 i386 burnt ISO to CD
Placed CD in Dell Inspiron E1505 Notebook
Boot to CD, Errors out and fails to load Gnome Desktop because Xorg fails.
Asks if I would like to see a detailed report.
I exit, and get multiple Broadcom errors repeated over and over on the screen.
I had the same problem with Feisty on the same notebook.

I would really like to install Ubuntu on this notebook and since I couldn't on the last release of Ubuntu, I was hoping that I could on this version. If you need my help, please respond. I will enter any commands that you need if I am able to.

I just wanted to point out that the same Ubuntu Gutsy Herd 4 disk works fine on my Dell Inspiron 1501 Notebook that has an ATI Radeon Xpress 1150 and AMD Turion 64 Mobile MK-36 Processor. I think the problem is in the video driver or something for the E1505.

If xorg exited with an error message about not having any valid modes then check out bug #103945, it seems to describe a problem I was experiencing with autodetection.

Is the ATI Mobility Radeon X1300 supported in Linux?

This has been happening for a long time.

Do this:
once you get booted up: ctrl+alt+F2 to switch to TTY2

sudo pkill gdm (this will usually take you away from TTY2, so ctrl+alt+F2 again)
sudo pkill xorg
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install xorg-driver-fglrx

once that is done:
sudo aticonfig --initial --overlay-type=Xv

now....
sudo gdm

and you will have a working xorg (note, after you install, when you boot your computer again, you will have to do the same exact thing with your installed setup)

Let me know if you get this to work.

So what we are doing, is updating the driver from the repository. Isn't the newest driver included in Ubuntu when it releases or is it because it's the restricted driver? So after I install I will have to do this again, but only one time?

How long has this been happening? I couldn't get Feisty to work either. I wonder if they are working on this? I have seen a few of these posts, but none of them are assigned to anyone. Do you think this will be fixed before Gutsy is released? I am sure there are a ton of people out there with this ATI chipset that will not know about this trick and just assume that Ubuntu just doesn't work for them.

So how do I make this bug report say confirmed? I will try what you said above to see if it works when I get home. Thanks.

Developers: Are there any commands you would like me to type from a command line using the live CD for troubleshooting this problem? I will help you in any way I can to get this bug fixed.

What I said _will_ work. The problem has been around since Ubuntu Feisty
and perhaps even before then. I have to do it all the time when I install
again on my laptop (MacBookPro ATI X1600) and with any other ATI as well.
And yes, you only have to do it once -- install the restricted driver that
is. Good luck, follow what I said and let me know for sure.

That worked. I am attaching my xorg log files (2) of them. The first is the backup file (the original file) that was before I did the restricted driver update, the second is the newly created xorg log that was created after installing the restricted driver that appears to have fixed the problem. While this (crutch) is not a fix, this may help the programmers to fix the problem once and for all.

I have attached a dmesg, lsmod, lspci -n, lspci -vvnn, sudo lspci -vvnn file. This file was obviously done after I was able to get into GDM with the restricted driver installed as noted above, but maybe it can help you developers out. This was done from the Gutsy Tribe 4 live CD.

I hope this helps.

I also didn't notice my Dell built-in Bluetooth module listed in there... What do I type to see that?... or is there a problem?

This dmesg, lsmod, lspci -n, lspci -vvnn, sudo lspci -vvnn file I attached is only after I loaded the restricted driver since I could not get into gdm to save the file on my USB flash drive from strait CLI since I do not know how. I would like to add the output of these commands before I update to the restricted driver, but I am not sure how. Could you explain how to do this? I am not sure the path to my USB flash drive, or if I will even have rights to in from CLI. I am also not sure how to output the text of the command line output to a file on my USB flash drive without a GUI. This should give you a bird's eye view of what is happening before I load the restricted driver. (I hope)

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide...
