When I open synaptic or update manger or open deb file or use apt-get this error messege will show:
"E: The package awcommon needs to be reinstalled, but I can't find an archive for it.
E: Internal error opening cache (1). Please report."

deleted /var/lib/dpkg/info/<package>.*
deinstalled the package using dpkg --force-... <package>

package manager is working again

if for maya 2008 with type,

sudo ln -s /usr/autodesk /autodesk
and then trying install awcommon and then appear this problem,

try this:

~$ sudo ln -s /usr/aw /aw

and then reinstall awcommon
