hp dv2415nr laptop brightness function combo doesn't work

In Ubuntu 7.04 on my HP dv2415nr laptop, the "fn" + "f7" (brightness down) and "fn" + "f8" (brightness up) key combos set the brightness to full on the first press, and do nothing afterwards.

As an addendum, in the latest Ubuntu 7.10 the brightness key combo now does nothing.
