ubuntu 6.10 cant find my modem

Im using ubuntu 6.10 and i have Acer Aspire 3100 pc with 1g memory.
When i try to get my dial-up connection to work gnomePPP cant find my modem anywhere, i got that connection to work in windows but not in ubuntu...
Everything else works just perfect and i dont wanna change back to windows because of this, so please help me to get it going....
