emachines M5312 - suspend will not resume at all.

Bug Description

When selecting the 'suspend' option on the eMachines M5312 the system goes down as it should but will not come back without pulling the battery. Using the power button to resume the machine causes the machine to come back on but it never returns to gdm and the only way I've been able to get back to gdm and a useable system is to pull the battery from the machine.

And you're running Feisty 32-bit ?

Feisty 32-bit, yes. Installed from the desktop live-CD. Used guided installer, using full disk. No packages installed outside of updates available after installation. I can try other install methods or setup if you need..

This bug (I'm assuming related) is on the same machine:

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug. Unfortunately we can't fix it, because your description doesn't yet have enough information.

Please include the following additional information, if you have not already done so (please pay attention to lspci's additional options), as required by the Ubuntu Kernel Team:
1. Please include the output of the command "uname -a" in your next response. It should be one, long line of text which includes the exact kernel version you're running, as well as the CPU architecture.
2. Please run the command "dmesg > dmesg.log" and attach the resulting file "dmesg.log" to this bug report.
3. Please run the command "lspci -vvnn > lspci-vvnn.log" and attach the resulting file "lspci-vvnn.log" to this bug report.

For your reference, the full description of procedures for kernel-related bug reports is available at [WWW] http://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies. Thanks in advance!

Hi Christer,

Hi Christer,

Care to test the Hardy Heron 8.04 Alpha series which is currently under development and contains an updated version of the kernel: http://www.ubuntu.com/testing . You should be able to test using the LiveCD. However, please note you can only test Suspend using the LiveCD, not Hibernate. If you can, please verify if this bug still exists or not and report back your results. Thanks.

The 18 month support period for Feisty Fawn 7.04 has reached it's end of life - http://www.ubuntu.com/news/ubuntu-7.04-end-of-life . As a result we are closing the linux-source-2.6.20 task. If this is still an issue with the most recent Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release, please feel free to reopen this bug. Thanks.

Please reopen this bug.

emachines M5312, Ubuntu 8.10. Still the same behavior: black screen (no backlight) on resume, no keyboard light. Screen remains dark after reboot, have to remove battery to be able to turn on normally again.

Looked into the log files (kernel, debug, messages), there're only entries until suspend, no log entry on resume.

I search low and high on Google last night, the problem seems to be the integrated ATI IGP 320M. All other laptops with 320M are unable to resume after suspend.

I've tried changing the settings in /etc/default/acpi-support (VBE, laptop-mode, ...), kernel option (irqpoll), and different drivers (ati, radeon) but couldn't make it to resume.

The machine suspends and resumes fine when Windows was on it.

Hi sillyxone,

Can you test with the most recent pre-release of Jaunty 9.04 (Currently Alpha4) - http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/jaunty/ . You should be able to test suspend using a LiveCD. Please let us know your results. Thanks.
