Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1171451/+editstatus and add the package name in the text box next to the word Package.

It also affects me.

Intel Dual Core (32 bits) 3GHz
Ubuntu 13.04 / LiveUSB (through Universal USB Installer)
Linux ubuntu 3.8.0-19-generic #29-Ubuntu SMP Wed Apr 17 18:19:42 UTC 2013 i686 i686 i686 GNU/Linux
G41 Graphics
2GB RAM

When I switch to another workspace (through keyboard) and then come back, its normal, the freeze is gone.

Adnan Shameem (needadnan) wrote :

To my experience the freeze happens with the last window that is to be minimized (when there are no further windows on the screen to be minimized).

Steps to recreate the problem:

1. Open any 2 apps (it could be Firefox and File manager)
2. Minimize the first app (it will not freeze)
3. Minimize the second app (now it will freeze)

As I mentioned above, if I switch to another workspace and then come back to the workspace (Ctrl+Alt+Right , Ctrl+Alt+Left) then the freeze is gone.

I can confirm what Adnan Shameem is saying.

Window freeze happens on minimizing of last window.

Freeze resolved by "Show All Windows - Exposé type thingy" (on my system top right corner...)

My system:

Lenovo T61p
4 GB Ram
120 GB SSD
Ubuntu 13.04
3.8.0-19-generic GNU/Linux
NVIDIA Corporation G84GLM [Quadro FX 570M] (rev a1)
Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T9300 @ 2.50GHz

Changed in unity:

The bug occurs only when running live cd with defaults (no user action on boot).
Press ESC button at startup live cd and select "Try ubuntu..." then everything is ok.

Not in my case, with my ThinkPad T61p.

I am not running the LiveCD.

I have a full install (upgrade from 12.10) onto a SSD.

This happens to me as well. Two different computers. Using compiz to hotkey between workspaces causes the display to hang. Also closing the last window on a workspace. The fix is to alt-tab to something else and then activity resumes.

My two computers couldn't be more different. One is a X61 Thinkpad, the other is an AMD desktop with Nvidia graphics. The only similarity is that both have been dist-upgraded several times. The desktop from probably 9.04 and the laptop from 11.04.

This affects me when I have multiple windows maximised. Then I click on the x at the top to close one. It closes another window instead of the window I intended to close. This is a problem.

I meant to say this is occurring on Raring after final release.

This happens to me with Thunderbird, Firefox, and others, not just Nautilus like it mentions in the duplicate bug #1170483.

It always happens at start up. The entire system hangs for up to five minutes except the mouse. After it does this a couple of times, the system starts to run normally.

Fresh install of 13.04, open source ATI Drives, on a Dell XPS Destop that is Ubuntu "certified hardware". I also ran a memtest86+, but there were no errors.

Running on an AMD A10-5800K, 4 GB DDR3-1866(OC'd), Samsung 840 SSD.
this is really the only issue I've had so far.
May be notable that this is a fresh install. And doesn't seem to be GPU related, as it affects nVidia users also.

Same problem with me on my Dell Mini 1012 Netbook. Is there a way to fix this? I was thinking of installing this permanently instead of running off the Live CD and my flash drive, but need web browser functionality.

I had the same problem. In my case the problem was with file manager that handles desktop. Try to start nemo or nautilus file managers.

Confirm - freeze happens on minimizing of last window, if "org.gnome.desktop.background.show-desktop-icon" param in dcong unchecked (set to false). If you check this back (set to true) - all is ok and no more freezes

Thanks for the tip @alex-kovtonuk, that fixed it! The key is "org.gnome.desktop.background.show-desktop-icons" though

Command Line : gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.background show-desktop-icons true

Happens to me also now after I installed Gnome 3.10 on my Ubuntu 13.10 installation. Before that it never occurred.

Will be trying to reinstall the OS to fix the problem as I have seen no other permanent solutions to the problem..

This happens to me on a fresh install of 13.10, on a new dell XPS 13. After changing some settings including hiding desktop icons, the problem appeared.

Symptoms were a locking of unity/desktop when the last window covering the desktop was minimized.

Again setting [ gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.background show-desktop-icons true ] corrected the problem.

The same behavior happens to me on 14.10.

I had been using a desktop wallpaper client (Wallch). After disabling Wallch and setting the desktop background to a solid color, the behavior ceased. Reactivating the wallpaper client causes the behavior to return.

Same thing on my computer running 15.04.
Problem is linked with nautilus handling the desktop and redrawing the desktop icons.

Hi,
I found a "fix", but it won't maybe work for all of you.
1. download & install Unity Tweak Tool from Software Center.
2. run it and then go to Window Manager tab, then General and TURN OFF Window Animations.

Best Regards,
Belleti
