Bug Description

When I do a reboot on a (K)ubuntu 7.04 system, it hangs forever. I've done I preseed installation, and even without a desktop system (just ubuntu-standard), the last message is "Restarting system".
The machine is a Dell optiplex 745, i.e. 2.6.20-15-generic #2 SMP i686, Intel ICH8 Family

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Unfortunately we can't fix it, because your description doesn't yet have enough information.
Please include as attachments the following additional information, if you have not already done so (please pay attention to lspci's additional options), as required by the Ubuntu Kernel Team:
1. Please include the output of the command 'uname -a' in your next response. It should be one, long line of text which includes the exact kernel version you're running, as well as the CPU architecture.
2. Please run the command 'dmesg > dmesg.log' and attach the resulting file 'dmesg.log' to this bug report.
3. Please run the command 'sudo lspci -vvnn > lspci-vvnn.log' and attach the resulting file 'lspci-vvnn.log' to this bug report.
4. Please run the command 'sudo dmidecode > dmidecode.log' and attach the resulting file 'dmidecode.log' to this bug report.
For your reference, the full description of procedures for kernel-related bug reports is available at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies . Thanks in advance!

Besides gathering the information requested by bdmurray, also have a look at https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-source-2.6.20/+bug/115906. Let me know if the 'reboot=b' option helps.

Tim,

I will look into the reboot=b thing tomorrow, when in front of the machine.

Thanks.

Tim,

The reboot=b option seems to fix the problem. The kernel http://people.ubuntu.com/~rtg/linux-image-2.6.20-15-generic_2.6.20-15.28_i386.deb however does not.

This bug persists in Hardy (8.04), and can be fixed permanently by adding 'reboot=b' to the end of the line that begins '# kopt=' in /boot/grub/menu.lst. A patch for the bug was sent to the lkml some time ago: http://lkml.org/lkml/2007/6/5/59

On further investigation, it seems that the bug has been fixed in the linux kernel source as of version 2.6.23: http://lxr.linux.no/linux/arch/i386/kernel/reboot.c . However, the patch only fixes the bug on machines with a motherboard name of '0WF810'. Some OptiPlex machines which fail to reboot have a motherboard name of '0RF703'. These are not affected by the patch, and are therefore still broken. See linux kernel bugzilla: http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=10547

This bug remains in the generic kernel-2.6.24-17 on Ubuntu Hardy (8.04).
The machine hangs at the point at which the kernel outputs the message "Restarting."

Confirming on another Optiplex 745 under Hardy, latest kernel 2.6.24.19.

Re Ben's comment #9, I have motherboard code 0KW628 (assuming this is the board's Product Name from dmidecode).

A colleague has an Optiplex 745 with code 0WK833 which doesn't have this problem, so doesn't look like it's restricted to Ben's two codes. Hope that's of use.

Also worked round with reboot=b kernel option, despite the following still appearing in dmesg:
[ 33.626818] iTCO_vendor_support: vendor-support=0
[ 33.642078] iTCO_wdt: Intel TCO WatchDog Timer Driver v1.02 (26-Jul-2007)
[ 33.642125] iTCO_wdt: failed to reset NO_REBOOT flag, reboot disabled by hardware
[ 33.642131] iTCO_wdt: No card detected

Hi Guys,

Care to confirm this is still an issue with the latest Alpha for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10. You should be able to test via a LiveCD - http://www.ubuntu.com/testing. Please let us know your results. If the issue still exists, can you confirm the reboot=b solution still works. If reboot=b is still valid, please attach the output of 'sudo dmidecode' .

Also note that we'll keep this open against the actively developed kernel bug against 2.6.20 this does not qualify for a stable release update (http://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates) and will be closed. Thanks.

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

This is still resent with latest Intrepid and latest 2.6.27 kernel.

Upon issuing a restart from within KDE, the system restarts and hangs on the itCO_wdt. If I shutdown completely, this works as expected.

The fix sets the "special reboot" for all machines of Type Dell OptiPlex 745.

Roderick: Your Acer Aspire is another case and I suggest you file your own Bug for that.

This reappeared for me with kernel 2.6.31-17-generic #54-Ubuntu . Put "reboot=b" back to the grub linux command line, and the problem was fixed. 2.6.31-16 was rebooting OK. My machine is a Dell Precision 690.

Geir Ove Myhr (gomyhr) wrote : Re: [Bug 115011] Re: Ubuntu hangs on reboot on Dell 745

Walter, the solution for this kind of problems is model specific.
There has to be a quirk in the kernel that basically says: If the
computer is an Optiplex 745, then default to reboot=bios. So you are
better off opening a new bug report for Dell Precision 690 than to
comment on one for Optiplex 745 (unless you can confirm that it also
doesn't work on those anymore).
