Bug Description

Printing worked just fine under Edgy for me. I did a clean install in Feisty, and here's what I get:

When I print a document using Acroread 7.0 or Firefox, each page is printed in an invalid mix of landscape and portrait. Here's what I mean:

********
* *
++++++++++
+ * +
+ * +
++++++++++
* *
********

Suppose that the asterisks outline where the content would appear on a regular, lportrait-oriented page. The plus signs indicate the outline of the actual paper that the content gets printed on. So when a page is fully printed (supposedly in portrait-orientation) I see the text rotated 90 degrees, and the text from the top and bottom is missing because it ran off the top/bottom of the paper.

I see this only with some apps: Firefox, Acrobat Reader 7.0. I don't see this problem with Evince, or OO.org Writer. KPDF gets the orientation right, but does have a less severe issue with improperly scaling and cropping the page. The test page that I get from the System -> Administration -> Printing dialog is perfect in every detail.

My printer is a HP Desktjet 6540, and I'm using the hpijs Deskjet 6540 driver.

OK, my ASCII art doesn't look good as HTML. so I'm attaching a photograph of a page that Firefox (mis)printed.

This may be the same bug as:
   https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-print/+bug/95208
but it's hard to tell because this present bug report talks about more apps than 95208 does.

It also seems similar to this bug:
   https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/kdegraphics/+bug/47649
but 47649 only talks about PDF files having this problem, whereas I'm having it even with non PDF files: web pages printed by Firefox.

Here's a concrete example:

This document: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Kalman_filter&printable=yes
prints perfectly using konqueror, but has the orientation+cropping problem when printed in firefox. This is the document that appears in the photograph attached to this bug report.

I had a similar problem to this and traced it down to the HPLIP stuff. I fixed it by
- opening the HPLIP toolbox
- choosing my printer
- going to print settings
- changing orientation to portrait

For some reason HPLIP had chosen reverse landscape for my newly installed printer. My guess is that firefox and others do not send a "use portrait for this page" control signal if they believe that the default mode is portrait. Note that this HPLIP setting is independent of the CUPS setting. I'm not sure how to two settings work with each other.

Christian,
Did the solution suggested by Matthew work for you?
Is this still an issue with gutsy or the latest development release hardy?
