Bug Description

my epson perfection 1200 worked ok before the last bunch of updates

scanimage thru the terminal hangs

gimp hangs looking for plugins

xsane image scanner hangs

nothing works.

sane-find-scanner still finds my scanner

SOLUTION:

I run strace xsane and found out that it was pausing while opening /dev/parport0. I just turned on my printer (that just happens to be connected to the parallel port) and tried again. Yo and behold, it worked. :-)

xsane hangs during start (also when runned as sudo).
gimp hangs while searching for plugins

According to man sane-mustek_pp this scanner is supported by sane.

Same here, xsane hangs for a long time on startup (about 2 minutes), then it finally opens.

My scanner is an Epson GT-9600 and it was working great a while ago, so I guess some recent update broke it :-(

I can confirm this problem as well.

USB scanner

I was using an HP Laserjet 1200 printer via parallel port. sane-find-scanner worked but everything else would hang.

Turning off the printer or changing it to use USB is only a work-around. That isn't a good solution to the problem since not all printers have USB.

My guess would be we need a way to disable sane from looking for scanners on LPT port(s).

ii libsane 1.0.19-1ubuntu API library for scanners
ii sane 1.0.14-5 scanner graphical frontends
ii xsane 0.995-1ubuntu1 featureful graphical frontend for SANE (Scan
ii libsane-extras 1.0.18.12ubuntu1 API library for scanners -- extra backends

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue for you. Can you try with the latest Ubuntu release? Thanks in advance.

It has been an issue for as long as I remember using Ubuntu.
The solution is simple, don't have a turned off printer plugged into the
parallel port.
I guess I can live with that, but it can be extremely annoying if you don't
know why your scanner isn't detected.

I assume it is still a problem in Jaunty then? Can you run "apport-collect 109530" for us, so relevant debug info is imported to the bug report. Thank you.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. We are sorry that we do not always have the capacity to look at all reported bugs in a timely manner.
There have been many changes in Ubuntu since that time you reported the bug and your problem may have been fixed with some of the updates. It would help us a lot if you could test the current Ubuntu version (10.10). If you can test it, and it is still an issue, we would appreciate if you could upload updated logs by running apport-collect <bug #>, and any other logs that are relevant for this particular issue.
