Bug Description

CD drive stopped working after upgrade from Edgy to Feisty(herd 5)

I didn't notice this problem until I tried to use a cd. Then I noticed that when I put a cd in the drive, it doesn't spin or anything. It will still spin when I first turn on the computer with a disk inside., or if I boot into windows.

I noticed that my /etc/fstab/ points to /dev/hdc, but that no longer exists. Furthermore, "dmesg | grep -i cd-rom" gives no output,
and "df -h" doesn't mention a CD Drive either.

Gateway support website says the cd drive is called a "Mitsumi 20X/48X IDE CD-ROM Rev. 1"

Steps to Reproduce
1. Upgrade computer to Feisty herd 5
2. Try to use a cd

Tell me what additional info I need and I'll put it up.

I'm fairly certain this is a duplicate of some other bug - other people seem to be compianing, but it seems to affect some cd drves more than others.

I get this when I try to mount /dev/sdb
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sdb,

       missing codepage or other error

(could this be the ide device where you in fact use

ide-scsi so that sr0 or sda or so is needed?)

in some cases useful info is found in syslog - try

       dmesg | tail or so

$ dmesg | tail

I can boot from the feisty live cd, but when I choose the default option (something like start or install ubuntu (with quiet splash removed) it starts, but the cd drive spins really loudly, ata2: tries the same things over and over, telling me to be patient, and eventually I have to eject the cd and turn off the computer.

Booting from the hard disk also does this, but when I eject the cd, it continues to boot. I just can't use the cd drive.

dmesg | less and a search for CD returns "No Pattern Found" Also I confirmed that this bug also occurs on another computer of the same type

Do you still have this problem in Feisty Final?

Yes. Upgrading to Gutsy fixed it at first, but then further upgrades caused it to not work. I'm tempted to just buy a newer cd drive, or maybe a new computer entirely
