ubuntu@server-687:/mnt$ dpkg-query --show upstart
upstart 1.5-0ubuntu8
ubuntu@server-687:/mnt$ ls -l /var/log/upstart
ls: cannot access /var/log/upstart: No such file or directory

ubuntu@server-687:/mnt$ cat /etc/cloud/build.info
build_name: server
serial: 20120905.2
ubuntu@server-687:/mnt$ lsb_release -c
Codename: quantal

Please also in general be safer about files and directories that are being deleted in /var/log.
