Bug Description

Dear Ubuntu developers,

Sunbird as a standalone application will unfortunately not be developed anymore by the Mozilla project. However, this is **the best** calendar I have ever tried and which I have been using for several years now. It is so powerful while being simple to use, manages dates, notifications, and more. It is so good that I can't go without it, this is why I am posting this request, to have the last available release in Ubuntu.

https://www.mozilla.org/projects/calendar/sunbird/

The place for the sources:
https://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/calendar/sunbird/releases/1.0b1/source/sunbird-1.0b1.source.tar.bz2

«Licensing

Sunbird is licensed under a MPL/GPL/LGPL triple license, allowing use of the files under the terms of any one of the Mozilla Public License, the GNU General Public License, or the GNU Lesser General Public License. »

It also exists at Debian Sid : under the name "Iceowl". Althought Ubuntu does not use the "Ice_xyz" names, and in case Ubuntu would be willing to save « Sunbird standalone » from the void which menaces it:
all the language files which can be used for « Sunbird standalone » are stored at Debian:
http://packages.debian.org/search?keywords=iceowl&searchon=names&suite=unstable&section=all

whereas at Mozilla the page still exists but... does not lead to any language file !

Here are a few screenshots showing Sunbird standalone for GNU/Linux:
https://www.mozilla.org/projects/calendar/sunbird/screenshot.html

Thank you for giving this request some consideration.

Best regards,
Joyce MARKOLL (aka melodie)

Hi,

Thank you for taking care of this old wish. I hope you noticed I started it by saying it was not developed anymore? :)

Could this wish be turned to a wish of resurrection for this project ? The only close equivalent I found is in Evolution which has been able to import my calender, and I don't even use it as a mail client, having already all in Sylpheed.

Nowadays who cares for smaller and standalone applications?

Thanks for your work.

Regards,
Mélodie

Here's some screenshots of GNOME Calendar, a new simple calendar app. I'd expect it to be available in Ubuntu next year (as it's still in alpha).

Mélodie this was my fault, but I closed the bug and there should be a text when I mark it as invalid.

Perhaps you could raise a question in the forum or on askubuntu please?

Hi,
I don't know where I could raise a question : I don't have a question, just a wish that some standalone applications would be continued or replaced, and also offer some compatibility features. Osmo has one method, Orage another one, and so on : there is not one which is able to import AND export the data! Isn't that something?

Thank you for your kind answer anyhow.

Jeremy, thanks, I will look forward to trying it. Wouldn't you try to work on an address book as well? ^^ (pimlico-projects had a good start - http://packages.ubuntu.com/lucid/contacts - contacts, task, calender... - but was bought (by Intel I think?) and not continued since either :/ )

gnome-contacts is included in Ubuntu 12.10 and newer (and is available for install in Ubuntu 12.04 LTS).

Hi Jeremy, too many depends. Compared to Contacts which was working quite well, offering categories to be created on the fly and export it looks like a bloatware. ;)

Thank you
